So I've got my mod1 on the 24th June and hopefully doing my mod2 late July. After that I'm going to be looking for a bigger bike on a restricted licence, I've been looking around for ages and these really are my only choices taking insurance costs and purchase price into consideration. Just wanted to know what you guys think about each of the bikes, whether you have personally owned one or just if you have an opinion. Would love to hear as I want to cover all bases, thanks :D FZ6 would be my first choice! And if you have any other options I would like to know and will take into consideration. Thanks :D

I have no personal experience of any of the bikes - other than a friend owning the SV for a while, but from what I've read/heard, I believe the twin engines lend themselves very well to being restricted, so the SV and ER6 are excellent options.

Having said that, I'm not personally a fan of the Yamaha bikes for whatever reason - so take what I say with a large pinch of condiment.

Cheers,
Yarek.

Have you considered the Honda Hornet or Suzuki Bandit? :D You will find the older bikes much cheaper to insure and there are some great deals to be had! If you want a Mint hornet you can pick them up for around £1800 and upwards for the original model or get a used but good condition for about £1300. If you really look around you may get lucky and pick one up for a grand :)

Thanks Yarek, I heard the SV is a good V-twin racer aha :)
And yeah I have considered then sstimmyy, and I know they would be cheap but that sort of styling just doesn't tickle my fancy, the new Honda hornet does though but as its still newish the price's are still high much like the Yamaha XJ6 :/ I have been thinking about doing a finance plan with a garage and getting something new though, I just don't know! So undecided.

Those are all great choices - but I'd agree with sstimmyy, don't overlook the Hornet. That's a great bike as well, that never got the respect it deserved here in the USA.

It all depends what you're after. The ER6 and the Fazer will lend themselves better to distance and commuting, where the SV takes a slightly more sporty approach. :)

I like the idea of the FZ6 most out of those three, but a lot of people say that the SV is good bike to restrict.

Though you know how nice that SV can look even with a dent in the tank :P sorry to see that.

Well if I did go for the ER6 or the FZ6 they would have to be the naked version, I love naked bikes!

Yeah same it's the duel exhausts under the seat that I think really set it off, especially if you got some after market ones! Yeah that's something else I have to think about, it's also the cheapest of the lot.

I've heard only good things about the Honda CB500. Restricts well, cheap to buy and run and even cheaper to insure. A perfect starter bike. All three of the bikes you suggest are perfectly good though for restricting, all comes down to how much you can afford and which one you like best.

Funny how we're all talking about the ER6, but the poll says ER-50 - I guess everyone else is like me and assuming you're not nuts enough to go for the ER5 - but the ER6 which is actually a decent bike :P

Argh..........

Hey.... I got a new-in-the-box tank to take care of that! :)

I'd say ER6.

Build quality is higher than the Suzuki and it'd restrict better than the Yamaha.

That being said, the build quality on the Yamaha would probably be better than the Kawa.

Go with the FZ6 s.

Why? Unrestricted its HP is around 97.
FZ6R/Diversion/xj6n - 67hp
Kawi 650 - 65hp
Sv650 - 72hp
(HP figures vary 2-3hp)

It's also built better and so many mods you can do to it you wouldn't recognize it.

It depends on what you want to use your bike for, Inline 4s don't restrict that well compared to twins, but the FZ6 would be the best bike out of the lot unrestricted in my opinion. I own a Fazer and it has never let me down, but after owning it for just over a year I am very bored of the restriction, it has very little power over 80mph and tops out at around 105mph, but if commuting or casual riding is what you are after its perfectly fine and after 2 years you will have a great bike. If you are looking to replace your first bike within 2 years I would say go for the ER-6 or SV650 as the FZ6 has wasted potential restricted and it is likely to be more expensive, not only in buying cost but running costs as well.

While it is valid to think about what the bike will ultimately be like unrestricted, have a think about how long you'll have it and whether you'll want to keep the same bike or switch to something else when your restriction period ends. I've always thought that if I had had to go through a restriction period I'd just have gone for a Ninja 250 and then bought a full on 600 when it ended.

That's what I did and that's what I'd recommend to anyone.

I can't think of anyone who I've seen last the full 2 years on the restriction and then unrestricted their bike. Everyone I've seen sells it on because they're bored of it at 33bhp and don't feel like it'd be any better unrestricted. Plus it's a great excuse to buy a new bike.

To be honest, you shouldn't really need to worry about it's power over 80mph. :P

Your throttle restriction effects the power in every gear. The Fazer has loads of accelerating power higher up which you don't get with the throttle restricted - you literally cannot turn the throttle far enough to get to it. This effects acceleration and overtaking ability which is much worse than lowering the top speed.
Also lowers speed control through the throttle.

Although i shouldn't worry about speeds above 80mph its nice to have some get go for overtaking, it comes in handy.
