Here's a little something I learned over the years. Hopefully it can help a few of you snowbound riders.

Interesting idea. It has been a while since I had spoked wheels on a bigger bike but I know there is a rub ring to go over the spoke nipples. Do you do anything similar for the carriage bolts?

Also, how about balancing it out?

I actually use an old tire tube cut down and put in between the bolts and tube. I don't worry about balancing because I usually limit my speed to about 35MPH.

Your winter riding vs mine is massively different...yours is actually good...mine is in 1cm of snow haha
