Well i'm not saying that the only way to become a biker is to crash, or that you are more of a biker when you crash, I am simply saying there is an element of that phrase that is true. You may know about one thing more than a crashless biker of 20+ without incident years. In the end though everyone learns something everyday. and I agree with you friz on you don't have to crash to learn something. I learnt to ride near to the centre of the road when you are leading a group in staggered formation. I crashed though and learnt this, but I could have done just by having a near miss. However other scenarios are different and can have different results meaning that you only learn something when you crash.
It would appear that this phrase is showing some quite conflicted views
