The Renthal R4 chain is prestretched, so you don't have to go through that few thousand miles of constant adjustment. I mean nothing feels worse than rolling on the power followed by a delay whilst the chain 'catches up'. Correct adjustment so that you cant really feel the chain, only the contact patch has really got to be the aim. I change my chain yearly, generally mid spring after the salt and rubbish of winter is over about 12 to 15,000 miles. I used to ride on Tsubaki's but I find the R4 a more reliable stable chain. By stable I mean, maintains correct tension for longer without adjustment.
I know riders who swear by OE chains, which once stretched remain stable for longer, I'm just not prepared to adjust my chain after every ride for a month whilst the chain reaches it's 'stable' state.
Take good care of your chain, it's important. I 'clean' with WD40 (X ring, chain) and then apply a type of lube dependent on weather conditions.
