Which Mic ?

I wish I could tell you the exact name of the mic I got from my buddy Jake2Wheels. I absolutely love it!!! great balance between my voice and my bike.. check my page sloppygrace under channels on youtube and tell me how you like it! No need to subscribe if you don't want, just a way to actually hear what it sounds like.. if you like it, remind me about this post and i'll dig into what mic it is. I know it costs about $6 on Amazon for two mics!! I personally think it sounds awesome.
Cheers I have a mic now just waiting for a case (to cut holes in) if it's usless I may well pick your brain lol

Gonna have to get a new camera :(

When I plug in my mic, the whole thing goes silent. Something gone badly wrong.

Will give me a spare for rear view of action though

I was thinking of getting the new cheaper go pro for the same sort of thing or just a cheap one from ebay or similar

Have you tried plugging in a different mic, to make sure there isn't a short in the old one :o ??? I had that problem before... the wire(s) inside the insulation decided to break after getting caught & dragged and had to replace the cord ~_~ . it's worth a look ;) .

You're probably right. It's most likely a problem inside the microphone. Or maybe I've just knocked out the mic from the 3.5mm female. Have to check that. There's a problem getting the new microphone that fits the Drift USB. Very difficult to get hold of nowadays. Last time was from Germany.

I use a Rode smartlav mic and run it into a zoom H1 voice recorder then just match up the video and audio after

I don't think I have the patience at this stage to do separate sound and pics (just getting the hang of it) lol once I get more proficient I may give it a go

I use a Sony ECM-DS70P Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone. It's expensive but definitely worth it.

I've just got a cheap one for now ...you might be put off by my voice lol but the more I get into it the more the costs will go up I'm sure

Honestly I've never figured out the point of having a stereo mic in a helmet :o ... the mic is stuffed into said helmet - how much stereo can you get :p ? The sound coming from around the cheek pad an the sound from behind :o ???

Just thinkin' ;) .....

I'm not a sound engineer but my thought is that it records your voice and the surroundings in stereo, because you'll be playing it back through stereo speakers on PC/mobile, unlike say a mobile phone hands-free microphone which is mainly for talking on the phone and the receiver is listening through just one ear.

Mmmm, it is true that a stereo mic will record your surroundings in stereo and if the microphone was behind your windscreen on the bike (with wind protection), it'd be ideal for getting the passing of cars. Inside a helmet, though, the space is very limited and the noise levels are high... so a stereo mic is pretty much not needed.

Now as far as playing through the computer... a stereo mic will sound stereo if played through stereo speakers but with a mono speaker, both channels (left and right) will be combined into one. On a mono mike (one channel), both channels (left and right) will sound the same in each speaker on a stereo speaker system (and of course, no different on a mono speaker). Again, being in a helmet, there pretty much won't be much difference between left and right, unless one of the mics are pointed right at your mouth - then that channel will be louder than the other as far as voice is concerned.

I'd have to run this by my audio engineer... but with the intermediate knowledge from the work that I do at the TV station, this is what I would say ;) . I'll have to run it by her in a little but :p .....

For mono mics you just clone the mono track to both stereo tracks.

Mono mics are directional typically, which is what you want in a helmet.

Drift mics are mono, and both iMovie and FCPX recognise it as mono and output to L and R channels. Think Sony does as well.

Now kids ;)

So your Drift mic goes to the GoPro that only records the audio to one side? Is that correct?
