Which editing software should I choose?

My use case; Single 4K action camera footage(with external mic plugged in) and I plan to cut bits out here and there so the recordings aren’t 30mins+ each time lol

My computer is incredibly slow but I don’t mind prepping it all and leaving the PC on for hours to do it’s thing.

If you're using a slower computer, make sure you choose editing software, that allows you to use proxy clips. That helps a ton.
Also you might want to take a look at this thread https://motovlog.com/threads/video-editing-creative-software.19325/
Thank you, so looks like Davinci Resolve is what I’ll most likely use. Hopefully my PC (https://amzn.eu/d/dvx5Zzs) can handle it, if not I’ll have to look into if I can transfer the videos onto iPhone and edit them there as it’s so much faster than the PC lol

You'll probably struggle with 4k and no graphics card, especially with just 4Gb of RAM
That's what makes proxy clips so good. My old pc, which finally quit on me, also had 4gb of ram and a 12 year old i5 processor, with integrated graphics. Editing 1080p video on it was frustrating, but when I learned about proxy clips, it made the editing process so much smoother and faster. Sure, rendering still took ages, but that was not an issue, as I did not have to sit behind the computer then.

I just posted a similar comment in another thread. My edititing is at least 10x faster, if you include render time maybe even 100x faster now that I’m using an iPad and Lumafusion. I can even use my iPhone. It never crashes like my pc did with vsdc or vegas pro and get this, it renders in real time. With my pc setup I’d hit render before I went to sleep then hope it didn’t crash in the middle of the night.

Thanks for the reply - how do you get your cam footage onto you iPad/iPhone? Thanks

I was having major issues with my PC rendering at 4k so I decided to finally upgrade my GCard got a 6gb 1660 pretty cheaply off a mate, now a 4k 10 minute video with high bit rate takes about 3 minutes as apposed to 1 hour!
Uploading is another story!!!!

Woah, that’s a huge boost! Congrats

Yeah when I went from a GeForce GTX970 to a RTX3060 it greatly sped up my rendering times. Graphics cards can make a big difference.

Also regarding uploading, when I went from my crappy 1Mbps farm country DSL to 150Mbps Starlink my upload times dropped from 20 hours to 1 hour!

You need the paid version to use the GPU for rendering, right? My Nvidia is overdue for an upgrade, I may also need to spring for the full Resolve license if it makes that big of a difference.

20 hours to upload!? It's funny, my cousin over in Boyertown has also complained about his youtube transfers taking forever. Now, I'm used to 4k transcoding times taking a while, but never particularly had an issue with actual uploads.

Yes, from what I remember when I bought Resolve Studio, you had to pay to get GPU-accelerated rendering. They did add some GPU acceleration in the free version when they went to 18, though.

More than that, you get the full suite of transitions, effects, and some other stuff, which escapes me at the moment, when you buy Studio... and it's a perpetual license, so upgrades are free.

I'm a huge proponent of Resolve, obviously, but I really believe it's the best editor out there. It's just resource-intensive, and will scale from the base requirements up to $50k mega computers. Pretty wild.

So I’ve been going through all my settings and checking everything because all my 4K footage is coming out as 1080p on YouTube.

Turns out the YouTube app defaults all uploads to 1080p, and you have to change a setting in the app itself to make it upload at 4K.

Checked and it works perfectly now. Just wish I’d known before I uploaded 2-4 weeks worth of content

Wow, that's an odd one! I've never seen that before, and I upload quite frequently - my videos get uploaded at whatever resolution I render them. Then again, I'm on desktop when uploading, not the app, so maybe there's a difference there?

Turns out it’s somewhat common from the app to be default at 1080p. To get above that you have to select “full quality” - I released a bud yesterday to test and it’s fixed it. My PC probably couldn’t even upload 720p(not joking) so have to do it all on my phone ‍♂️

Wow, you [and by you, I mean ME] learn something new every day! I've never uploaded via phone, so I've never seen this before. Now I know how to avoid low-quality [resolution, anyway] :D
