What The Hell Just Happened??

You could always do a vlog to explain the adventure you have just went through and leave it at that. Then people won't think you're sketch.
Just got back from filming, gonna put this one up and see how it goes. If I start getting haters then I might have to take it down

This is great info. thanks for sharing. on another note, how many youtubers do you think started growing their channel by using the promote ads?

a few very small motovlog channels i followed seem like they grew to thousands of subscribers overnight. i always wondered if that was organic or the product of a promoted ad campaign.

No problem.

I think unless you have something seriously special, unique or several viral videos its very hard to grow. Whatever you do it's not an overnight thing, it can take years. But I reckon a lot of youtubers have used some sort of promotion to help them along. As long as it's not some sketchy paying for fake subs/likes/views then theres nothing wrong with it, its the legit way to get real people to watch your stuff and grow your channel. Big motovloggers like 6F4H (IIRC) have used AdWords etc, its pretty common.

I'm glad they did the right thing and refunded the amount over budget. I haven't actually used Facebook's promotion features, but they work differently - you pay a certain price up front, and they promise a certain number of promotions. If you're going to promote (and personally I have no problem with that), that seems a much more fair model. You can scale your promotion to what you can afford so that what happened to you is impossible.

Interesting share about the ad promoting thing. As for the video, it's a channel trailer video you promoted, just let it be as-is.

Me too haha.

Yea it turns out Google's model is similar. You don't pay up front but no matter what the result of the campaign you never pay more than your monthly limit. So if you get more clicks than expected thats great, or if you get less you only pay for the clicks recieved. Pretty fair concept. Any charges over your budget are automatically credited back to your account so no need to panic like me!

Decided to leave my trailer on the channel, that is until I get better content and update it. Cheers guys :)

I was actually thinking of throwing a few bucks at my best performing video on my channel. Not so sure about this now lol, dont want to get banned for a sudden massive influx of views.

You won't get banned, that was just my worry if my channel had been spammed by bots. YouTube will know the difference, and if you promote the video then all the views from that will be legit.

Chuck a few bucks at it and see what happens. Though if I was you I wouldn't bother, you seem to consistently get more views than you have subs so you're doing something right!

I've stopped promoting mine now, after looking at the tracking and analytics there isn't much real gain from it apart from the rare subscriber, you end up putting more in than you get out of it. Although I admit that bug on my trailer promotion gave me a nice kickstart, that was a one off accident on Google's behalf.

Cool man, thanks for the advice...I decided that I wont be spending a dime on any of my videos at this time.
