So, just monitoring views on my latest video and this happens. Oh.

Any ideas whats going on? (inb4 'you paid for views')

In minutes my subs have gone from 12 to 82, views through the roof, also getting comments and likes. The comments seem genuine though and not from a bot? Freaking out here.

Hmmm that's interesting.

At first i saw it said estimated views so I was thinking your video just got viewed a few times back to back super fast by different people....but then with the comments and likes it seems to me your channel or a video was linked to by a bigger channel. That's all I can think man.

Regardless that's pretty awesome.

Its worrying to be honest, I've not paid for views or anything like that, but if YouTube thinks I did, do they shut people down for that? Hoping the 23k is just a mistake...

Well it's under estimated views so I think it't estimating how many views you are going to get on that video in 24hrs based on the frequency of views so far. That's just my guess....or it's just a glitch....or you're a dirty view buyer...just kidding :p

So this is whats actually showing up on the videos. Not 23k thankfully. Maybe it was just slow to update or something? It's strange how it all came through at the same time.

On my old gaming channel I would upload a video and it would get thousands of views instantly. I want to say it got stuck at like 301 for about 24hrs then it would update to the correct view count. So I think your current view count reflects how many actual views you have. If it was at 301 then I'd say you got waaayyy more.

the 301 pause was a thing they used to do back in the day. It was a "big deal" to be part of the "301 club" on a video.

I didn't know that wasn't a thing any more haha

That channel I ran was years ago in the Halo 2 and 3 days. Once I stopped playing games as much I kind of let it die. Tis a shame. I wonder how big the channel would be nowadays if I kept it going.

So does anyone have any idea what that 23k spike was all about? All calmed down now but I have to admit I proper panicked when I saw it happening

I think it was just a prediction of how many views you it thought you were going to get. You must have got a lot of views super fast, that or it was a glitch. That's all I got haha

I've had it happen before also. Think it's just a glitch YouTube has sometimes.

Sub count is a few hours behind. If you have the email notifications on they come well before you can see them on YouTube.

uhh..
i have also seen it in my analytics but with subs.
One morning wakeing up and lost 2.ooo Subs (i just had 100) wondering about this.

Next day everything was normal again.
Would jump through the Roof if i ever hit that 23k view mark:)

So... I have an explanation now! Here we go.

The purpose of the video in question was to help promote the channel, so as well as making the video I saw youtube's 'promote' button and went for it. Simple, right? I set a £2 budget expecting up to 100-ish views which was reasonable to get the word out a little more, nothing wrong with a little self promotion.

Now let's be clear, at the time of the spike my adwords account said the ad was 'under review', so inactive, hence the panic. Except it WAS actually live, and it stayed live well past my budget. It didn't stop until hitting 24k views, at a cost of £1,180  just a little more than my £2 budget.

Adwords updated overnight, so I woke up this morning to see £1.18k on my account. Explaining the spike, but creating a whole new issue.

Having spoken to Google, the charges above my budget are waived because they over-delivered. So for £2 I extended my reach to 24k viewers, some of which went on to watch my other videos, and gained 70 subs.

Now thats all cleared up, on to the bad stuff. From everyone elses point of view, having 24k on just one video seems suspect right? So much so I'm debating removing the video. I legitimately promoted my channel, but to others it probably looks like I bought views from some sketchy site.

What does everyone here think? I'm not the only one to have promoted in this way, guess I was just unlucky (or lucky?) to be the one Google screwed up on.

I get how the whole paying to promote your stuff thing works, but how on earth can they promise that many views? I know it's not "guaranteed" but the shear amount of views served in one day on a small channel like yours seems a little "staged" on their part. I wonder if all of those views are actually real or if they inflate it to show you they got you views. Tis crazy....

But as far as deleting it? I wouldn't worry too much. I personally don't care how many views someone's video has. I wouldn't judge you at all. I would just assume it went viral or got posted on some huge website at the right time to allow for so many views.

Personally I would bask in Google's mistake, ride the wave, and welcome any new followers you might get. That's my 2 cents.

No idea, but when you enter your budget it calculates from a history average how many views you're likely to get I assume. After that experience I have no doubt they can deliver though! I imagine it if was fake or inflated they'd have been caught by now, they're kinda in the spotlight being such a well known company.

I get what you're saying, but my mindset is that its harder to correct a bad rep than to build a good one, if people think I'm a cheat and paid for sketchy views that's likely to get me a bad rep IMO

I think my first course of action is to go out now and make a vlog about the whole situation to clear it up, so people know the deal

You do make a point. I guess what they do is make sure your video is at the top of suggested videos when watching similar videos or bring it up next after someone watches another video. It's just up to the user to click and watch.

Tis your decision. You could always do a vlog to explain the adventure you have just went through and leave it at that. Then people won't think you're sketch.
