Most riders in my area just wear shorts and sandals it seems...I am heavily dressed in comparison with a helmet, gloves, jeans, sneakers, and usually a hoodie. I do have a leather jacket for cold days though.
The day they'll come off... you won't find much left.

You've heard of road rash queen, right?

Oh, yes. And I in no way condone that kind of lax in the gear department!

The day you don't wear gear you will crash, but take precautions wear gear all the time & this won't happen.

TBH you could almost argue it should be a law to wear all the gear, even if your popping to the shops?

A Helmet is a requirement why shouldn't the rest?

I also think jackets that are brought into the UK should come standard with a spine protector, I wouldn't wear a jacket or my leathers with out one knowing what I know now.

no motorcycle gear should be legally required, not even helmets, i would allways wear one and would encourage other people to do so, but if you choose not to wear a helmet then its your own fault (im not saying i was people to die, i just believe in freedom of choice). Personally, i wear
Helmet, Gloves, Jacket, Trousers (kevlars), Boots, at all times.
There was one point i rode with just trainers on... but wouldnt do it again, didnt feel safe.

Thats why insurance rates are through the roof, because of deaths & crashes. I rode my 50 with just a helmet, kept saying to myself it will only do 30 max, My cousin was sat at some traffic lights with kevlar jeans on, he mis-placed his foot weight of the bike went over, broke his knee & shoulder. wore gear ever since didn't even look bad. Persoanlly I wouldn't wear kevlar jeans but thats my personal opinion.

the only thing that would stop that would some form of brace, or "hard" clothing, leather still compresses as so textile trousers.

Sucks about breaking his knee though... must of put his foot on some funky angle

My Dainese Trousers have a CKG (Carbon Kevlar Glass) which almost cover the inner knee, where I work we deal with alot of Carbon fibre, Kevlar & fibre glass so I could coat them if needs be. I know what you mean, where the break was, the frame must have come down on it pretty straight. the bars where turned outwards so the bar end did nothing. Nor the crash bung.

Lost something like 80% of the cartliage in his knee, if he walks more than about 2mile he starts to feel it grind. & walking next to him you can hear it. He'll never ride again due to the shock it's had on him which is a bummer, he can't pillion because of the angle of the leg which a pillion has to sit at.

What do you think of this neck brace - http://www.ridersdiscount.com/forum/lea ... road_2.jpg

Originally from motocross, hub they make them for the road now.
Several surgeons, experts etc. have said it's highly likely to save you life in an accident. Can't remember the exact figure but it was supposed to reduce te chance of serious neck injury by at least 60%, I think the figure was higher though.

I'm only learning but I've got:

AGV K3 Helmet (Box BX2R as a back-up)
Hein Gericke Textile jacket w/ back protector
Hein Gericke Textile Trousers
Bullson Boots
Hein Gericke Leather Gloves (got winter gloves too)

I was told to always dress to crash.

By the way, didn't mention.

HJC IS-MAX helmet
RST Tractech leather jacket (in green, 'cos I haz style)
RST Tractech leather gloves (also in green. Green is good)
RST Tractech leather trousers/leggings (though I rarely wear them. Reason below)
SIDI Black Rain Evo boots

I am thinking of investing in a forcefield back protector, even though the RST back protector seems solid enough. Can't be too safe.

As for why I rarely wear my leather trousers - I also walk a lot, and there are no convenient changing rooms at uni. Leather really gets in the way. Not to mention, I have a half-broken (i.e. badly healed) knee, and wouldn't really mind getting it broken again so it can get fixed. I know, it sounds masochistic, but it's just how it is.

As with everyone else, get the gear.

I've jotted up mine below as a guide and I'd consider it a good rounded decent price gear (leathers are better imho but I can't afford them).

Helmet Shoei X1100 - £250 (Most important get one that fits correctly! If you don't know ask.)

Jacket RST Paragon 2 - £170 (comes with winter liner, shoulder and elbow armour, a back protector and air vents for summer!)
Trousers RST Paragon 2 - £140 (Comes with winter liner and knee armour)
Boots Sidi Black Rain - £140 (Water proof and have lasted, but basic)
Gloves wont recommend my pair as they be over priced but I liked them £80

So a total of about £780, wow you know that's the first time I've added that all up!

But myself, I wouldn't consider riding in anything less, I used to be a mad cyclist and would cycle about 40 miles a day and the only time I had a bad accident was the ONE TIME I didn't have my gloves and helmet on. And that was a hospital trip in an ambulance.
