What is a "lifesaver"

I've only heard that term used here, and maybe some on youtube.. What is it and how/when/why do you do it?

Not sure why you've only heard the term here. In the UK at least, the "Lifesaver" was referred to in my theory test, my instruction and the police motorcycle bible and every other place I've ever seen.
