Voice recorder options a few questions

I have just bought a go pro HD2 to replace the Pov 1 and going to start making videos again.. Need audio

I've just been on e bay and there is a bewildering array of dictaphones/voice recorders all, it seems, capable of doing the job.

My requirements are reasonable quality, record 6 hours or so (all seem up to this), digital, well made, USB, easy transferable format, small and simple to use for big thumbs in gloves and cheap.

I know it will need an external microphone.

Why is the Olympus DS40 the tool of choice with lots of Vloggers?
What about something like the Olympus WS320M?

What do you use and why...anyone got anything for sale with ext mic, I'm in the market...

Firstly doesn't the 2 have an external mic socket?

Secondly I have a Sony dictaphone and it's great for vlogging when I use my Go Pro HD.

Yes the 2 does and its a thought..

I'm not a true vlogger as such. Most of my commentary is laughing when I fall off (which is a good indication that its not serious)

I think i will buy a mic and drill the skeleton case I have. The dictaphone would give me versatility in the fact that I could still have some voice recording even if the cams mounted away from me. Damn, i'm talking myself into both now...

Are these dictaphones much of a muchness in terms of recording quality?

I don't know about comparisons with other dictaphones for quality but here's my first vlog using the go pro and the Sony dictaphone.

which will then lead to the biggest issue of mic placement inside your lid.

I have a Drift 1080p HD with external mic and have tried everything for mic placement but can't get the quality.
Has anyone else had this or is this the craop side of the Drift that the mic is naff?
Where do you put your mic?
Have you found a better alternative by using a dictaphone with a Drift for audio?

I used an old Galaxy S the other day and the quality seemed a little better but it was a quick setup and harder to control with it being a phone.

I hate the Drift mic witha passion and bought a cheapo mic off eBay and that's 1000x better. You also need the 3.5mm rip off adapter for the drift as well to do this.

Just wondering, i have one of those lids where they flip up, so no padding at the front to hide a mic. Any body got ideas where to stick one?

That worked for you did it? Do you use the Foggy Face Mask as well.? I have one of those. I'm assuming you have the mic between your mask and the front part of your lid? D you still have the mic setting on the Drift on the lowest setting possible?

yeah, I put mine in the cheekpad where the chinstrap comes through, hides (alot of) wind noise and picks up sound fairly well, for proof just check the videos haha

Fair enough, ill try that when i buy a Dictaphone. All i can afford right now is a Chinese one off ebay. But i suppose everybody's got to start somewhere...

Yes that worked fine. In the colder seasons i use the Foggy Mask and the mic does sit between my mouth and the mask. Yes I always use the Drift mic sensitivity on 1 bar. As the Drift HD170 uses a proprietary connector, i.e you have to use their mic or buy the following to use a standard 3.5mm mic.
