I'm far from an expert. I'm far from a novice. I'm what some call a noob. I've only been riding for ~8 months. I decided to give my take on a first bike being a 650cc bike. I've ridden over 5,000 miles since I got my sv650. This video was made to help those out who have questions on starting on a v-twin or starting on something larger than a moped with fairings :-P

And for those who don't want to waste 6 minutes of their life:

A Sv650 is most definitely a decent beginner bike. It has torque to get you through some tight situations. The power is very easy to be in control of throughout the power band. The riding position is neutral and very comfortable. The stock seat is not to my liking, but I don't have the cash for a Corbin/Sargent. The bike itself is on the inexpensive side with insure being bloody cheap.

The Sv has some disadvantages as a first bike. The bike seemed fairly heavy for the first 500 miles until I got used to it. 2up riding is not the greatest either. Personally, the shift lever positions makes me have to exaggerate the shifting process compared to other bikes which seem to just click down. ( press down to downshift, like boot up off the lever a good inch, then go down again). Specifically, my sv has a loosy-goosey throttle and the clucth is waaay tight, but that is a bike specific thing.

All in all, i am pleased with the Sv. It has taught me well and continues to do so daily. I planned on keeping her for a decent amount of time, but my plans never seem to stick. This spring, I feel an upgrade coming :-)

Any questions, let me know.

Great video dude, I agree, as long as you're sensible there is nothing wrong with getting a bigger bike as your first one. The throttle goes both ways, and the people who say that they are too powerful seem to forget that. ;)

I think you pretty much summed up the SV.

Cheap Insurance
Fast Enough to keep up with your mates
Looks Good
Plenty of spare parts available
Good Fuel MPG
Sounds great.

Over here in the UK you can't just jump on a 650, and I agree on with you when you say its a beginners big bike.

Some riders stick with the SV and don't upgrade atall it simply is good enough. I await to see in a year and a half time if I still want to keep her.

great video i would love a sv 650 or a sv 1000 cant decide

A lot of people who upgraded to the 1000cc downgraded again.. They expected it to handle like the Sv but have power.. Unfortunately it is a much larger lump to get round the corners and they didn't like it.

I lived my Sv but I had a naked version was was my only downside.

The engine Breaking is much more effective than inlines and is an aspect of the bike that can put MANY people off (same with any twin)

You have to experiment with the engine breaking to use it to your advantage (much like Counter steering)

One thing you will also notice is the noise from the engine itself... It whirls :) lovely :D

I wish I still has the Sv so I could do an introduction to it :(
