Sony AS-15, stereo external mic: Where/How?

Hey guys,

I'm moving away from my hack-job Hero1 GoPro external mic setup to a new AS-15 with a Sony stereo lapel mic. Instantly better quality.

However, I don't want this thing in my nose/mouth, and I'm worried about losing sound quality installing it behind a cheek pad.

What setup have you guys found that works best? This is a fairly large mic 1" by 1/2" with 2 mics.

I would like somewhere to start before I begin trial and error.

I do know i get a ton of pop/Darth breath if it's mounted directly in-front of my mouth/nose.

Thanks in advance!

I wiggled a very similar one up on the brow pad above my eyes .... You can 'just see it' if you go looking for it with helmet on .... Mostly though it's just there without seeing it ... Good for voice with visor down ... Visor up , the location causes fade pretty quick though ... No reflection of sound .... Have to speak a little louder .. Or amplify voice in editing...

Oh and I just routed and tucked the cable in behind the pads around the top of the brow piece and then inside the shell to exit nearest the camera like normal .... I have a flip face helmet and drift mounted like a Teletubbies antenna...

I have mine behind my cheek pad and it works just fine without having to talk any louder than normal.

My helmet doesn't allow me to put it up on the brow, not without carving away some of the foam.

MrCodajastal, would you recommend making a pocket? My thought is to cut a slit in the back of the cheek pad, slide the mic into it, and then wriggle it up to the front of the pad... this way the padding fabric acts as a mic sock.

Is yours just hanging out there with no foam covering?

DO NOT cut your helmet.
Mine has the foam in place and sits behind the right cheek pad with the tip of the mike just at the edge.

fair enough ... i just slipped the lapel clip into the fabric covering the brow area ... it looks like its sticking way out!! ... but with helmet on you dont see it...

ill try remember take a pic ... i know every helmet has its own internal shapings...

not stomping my foot about it ;)

i did try it in the cheek piece area first ... but the size of the microphone made it difficult there too... (take that codsy!!! ;););):p:p:p)

overall its usually fiddling and moving the mic around ... till you find the magic location for your helmet/breathing/ambient noise/voice etc ...

show us a pic of the mic maybe?.. your finger for size reference? ... visuals always help!
:)

Damn man, you must be using the mic from you karaoke machine if its too big :eek::eek:;)
How did you know about the........never mind :rolleyes: ....
Nah ... Just the mic I have is about .... Hmmm ... A short AAA battery size?? .. Behind the cheek pad pushed the pad out a bit much ... I get twitchy about the cheek pads pushing too much ... I'll have to definitely do a pic!!

Time to buy a smaller mic my friend from the south :)

Do you really NEED stereo sound? It's problematic to put it in a position where it'll catch the two channels properly.
The best way to get stereo in a helmet is, of course, having each mic under a cheekpad, something you cannot do with off-the-shelf mics.

i dont NEED stereo ... but it was/is the best voice quality and position i have gotten yet... hell i dont even really know if the Ghost records in stereo?
