So I Picked Up A Hero5 Black The Day They Released...

I had been waiting for the new generation to come out, having used my ol' trusty Hero2+ for ages now. A couple weeks prior to the release day of Oct 2 I saw the announcement on youtube of all places. I figured I would go get it that next day! Turned out, it was not released until the 2nd, but on the 2nd I did get it!

Anyway. You know the usual tidbits -- I just wanted to share with you some of the other bits that the specs don't tell you.

1st - Image stabilization. Only works at 1080p 60fps or below. Clearly it's using the 4k ability of the camera to downsize to 1080p and center the frame of the shot easier. Smart move, I suppose, but I never read any limitations of the "image stabilization" prior to buying it...

2nd - Same for the Low Light capability -- Not in 4k! I don't recall off the top of my head if it had framerate limitations, but I do know it does not work in 4k mode!

3rd - External mic -- This makes me a bit stabby. I still cannot buy their stupid $50 adapter that I want. First, it was not released with the camera. I've checked back several times, and now instead of coming soon, it says "out of stock" -- Everywhere. I picked up a Sony ICDPX333 digital recorder and have been playing with that, syncing up my audio (which actually isn't as bad as I thought it might be) but I'm still annoyed by having yet another thing to turn on and off and then time, etc.

The USB C connection makes it so that you cannot use the old mic cable... Which, I don't hate. I think the USB-C is a better interface. It's non directional, so you can just reach up n' plug it in -- not do the backwards dance every damn time like we do currently with the older USBs. I have bought USB converters to try to get the older cable to work, no success. I even found some USBC Microphone setup that I guess folks use for a headset or mic for XBox? It didn't work either, so I just wait... someday, maybe I'll be able to source/buy this magical adapter...

As for the door -- It's got a small push button that allows you to slide it downward, then pop it off revealing the suctioning little gasket. It's pretty cool, a bit tedious the first couple times I had to open it due to the vacuum it creates and my not wanting to break anything. The door fyi, does indeed come off with ease, as it flips up, you just keep flipping it and fold it onto the camera and it pops right off. No big deal at all, seems like eventually that could break, but probably not without a TON of use.

Battery and MicroSD card both loaded from the bottom, nothing fancy there. Looks like about 2:15 for recording time with the battery, which, was about all I got out of my old Hero2 WITH the backpack -- so that was a pleasant surprise for me.

The new 3 microphone setup really works pretty well. Up to about 30mph you can still hear me talk without a mic, which is darn impressive to me. The stereo auto adjusting is kind of cool sounding, to hear the stereo move when I was editing was pretty slick.

So, any questions, hit me up I'll try to answer them as best as I can for you.

Good write up!

Videos not normally permitted, but as you've done a useful piece, I'm happy to let it stay.

Cheers!

Really the big thing to me is @ 1:03 in the video you get to hear the stereo mic action happening, here it actively changing position due to the sound as I move my helmet. That's way cool in my opinion. But if you or any other mod want to remove it, I will not be offended.

On another note -- Another memory of the new GoPro - While transferring pictures via USB - it doesn't charge... That's really annoying to me and I'm not sure why it's doing that, except maybe for a heat issue if it was to be charging and transferring at the same time. That said, it doesn't drain the battery while transferring, just doesn't charge.

Yea the only thing that makes me not want to upgrade to the 5 is having to buy all new adapters. I still think I'm going to grab a 4 and use my 3 for a backup.

Good video sir!

Don't forget, the new black is $100 cheaper than the old Black was... I was considering buying the 4, but I really liked the idea of having the screen occasionally... the new Hero5 Black solved both of my issues. Yes, the new adapter is annoying, but worthwhile in the end. Way nicer USB cable. I bought 4 more USB C cables as the black only came with a ~1' cable. I like to charge my devices in the kitchen, but that cord would have had it dangling off the side of the counter being that short...

fyi, these are the additional cables I picked up: https://amzn.com/B00YT688U0

Thanks for the links. I will need to get some USB C cables if I jump on it because I have yet to own anything that uses them and I know for a fact I'll lose the one it comes with haha

I have a stereo microphone plugged into my Hero4.. Does the same thing.. Stereo sound! For the guys recording in mono then copying it on both L and R channels.. It ain't the same. :)

I'm sticking with the black 3+ for now. Nothing in the new camera is making me want to upgrade yet. The batteries have changed from the 3, the cables have changed and i'd probably still only use 1080p/60fps anyways. I thought the Karma was going to push me into buying the set up as i've been looking into drones but then the mavic came out.

I did upgrade from my old Hero2+ which topped out at 1080p@30fps -- So I was due. I'm not unhappy with my purchase, I think the optics are a bit nicer too, and the added framerates are a nice touch compared to what I was used to for options! I'm still awaiting being able to buy the blasted Mic Adapter... Luckily, I'm in no real hurry now, as being October, we'll be getting snow before I know it...

Still can't believe they are charging $50 for a USB-C dongle, but looks like Apple just got into that business too. I'll be getting a Hero5 for Christmas and I think I'm just going to move to external audio like a Tascam or Zoom.

I did a recording with a TasCam DR-05 -- It was ok, but didn't bring enough to the table to warrant a second device to make sure is turned on, etc. The USB-C device is more than a simple USB cable, it's an external USB mic - doing an analog to digital conversion, with a pass through port for charging -- i.e. basically a mini USB - C Hub. I'm not saying it's NOT overpriced, but there certainly is SOME R&D that went into it. If you check out my review of the TT250 45t sprocket, you can see the audio quality with the tascam. (I'm attempting to not post video links to keep the mods happy!)

I have since returned my Tascam DR-05. If I decide to do external audio again, It'll be with a DR-40 ($50 more, but does more channels. Could have an external feed for the bike exhaust AND a feed for the voice mic. Do my own processing at home to mix properly. I hope to do another video today, 60 degrees F out today, they say!

Wow man, thats actually pretty incredible in terms of noise reduction...If I leave my internal mic rolling and try to film a vid, the audio will sound like garbage due to the wind noise. Video looks buttery smooth as well, especially during night time conditions.

I threw you a sub too, like the content man!

Thanks for the feedback and sub! Unfortunately, it snowed this morning... so my content will probably really drop off for a while. Maybe I need a snowmobile? :P

Similar problems here bro, getting cold as hell and ice will be a real concern...switching to Mountain Bike trail vids for the winter!

I wouldn't have upgraded, but since my wife told me to pick a new GoPro for my birthday/generic winter holiday present, I chose the 4 Black over the 5. I just got set up with all the accessories I need for my 3, and I didn't want to have to go buy all new stuff and adapters all over again. I chose the black over the silver because the black had the features I wanted, like better image quality and such, while the silver had features I don't need, like a viewscreen.

Coming from my old Hero2 - None of my gear would have transferred, so that was to me, a no brainer. I do like the screen, and I do like that it turns off so that it's not wasting time. It's awesome for a quick glance at the view it's recording though, when I set it down somewhere, like for an offroad hill climb -- it's good to KNOW what's in the frame. If I had the 3, I probably would have done the 4 as you did. :)

Should have bought Hero4 instead..Sigh....have to wait for 3rd party Hero5 accessories...if they allow it....
