I don't get why the rage is so focused on the actual monetization rather than the discoverability. With less than a 1000 subs you earn nearly nothing and you probably spend way more producing the vids anyway. Youtube makes as little money on your stuff too as they still need to host your videos which is a pretty expensive part of the service and every penny you earn goes into that.
As far as motivation goes, I would be severely disappointed if I worked my ass off for that shiny coinage only to be given pocket change. In the beginning you can't survive on motivation alone, that quickly makes a fun hobby become a unbearable side job with no pay. Know your worth.
The discoverability is a completely different issue though. But I get why youtube does it this way. Youtube is a business and while your channel might be great, most sub-1k channels aren't. And there is way too much video being uploaded at all times to sift through it all to find the gems, in the end they know that if they just keep insisting that the good stuff is what earns them revenue, they will keep allocating shelf space to those vids and let the rest sit in a bin somewhere near the back of the store. TBH I can't find a good reason for them to owe me views. But I know that good content has the right of way so my motivation to continue is to constantly improve my stuff and eventually reach the point where subs and views grows by being valuable for the business. Just need to get over that 1000 sub hump first.
TLDR; I don't think money is a good motivation.
