Secretism and motovlogging

A question for all you vloggers out there, do your non-motovlogging friends know you vlog?

Personally I keep it quiet and ensure nobody knows about my channel outside of the motorcycling/motovlogging community. On Facebook I go to the extent of having a friend list specifically for motovloggers and motorcyclists, so only they can see some of my posts. Is this going too far? Probably.

As I see it, motovlogging is an odd concept, something quite strange to conceptionalise. I can’t be bothered explaining it to everybody I know! As well as this, vlogging seems much more personal than Facebook, I have too many old friends and colleagues for it to be personal. Odd since Facebook is technically more private than posting videos to the world on Youtube. Either way, my vlogging life and 'other' life is something I want to keep separate.

What are your thoughts?

I tried to keep it seprate, but someone found me and in a matter of minutes it was all of facebook.
Gets worst he lives on my road and hes a ****. :D

hmm interesting one, I don't really speak out to people about it but having the camera draws attention and people want to see videos. I'll show people close call videos but not usually my actual vlogs. My family watches my videos (pretty sure) but I don't really mind there, I say what I want etc.

It does feel a little strange telling people you make youtube videos as it does seem like a "double life" to some extent. meh!

I have a few friends who know about it, but they don't know very much and they don't generally watch. My coworkers definitely don't watch, hell most of them can't even figure out what's going on. Personally I think that's amazing considering my screen name is literally printed on the tail of my bike and I never take the camera off my helmet. Apparently most of my coworkers aren't terribly bright...

I think I get some kind of performance anxiety and don't really like it when people I know (who aren't vloggers) watch my stuff. Fortunately most of them know it and don't watch, or even care.

I tell everybody that asks, my friends all know, my family knows about my videos. I like it when I hear they check my page to see if I have put new stuff up.

All my videos are family friendly so it's cool with me.

I try and keep it between motovloggers and bikers. Motovloggers as they understand the whole "talk to yourself into a camera and upload it riding along" and to my biker friends as they understand the need, if so required, for evidence in accidents etc. Plus just filiming ourselves riding is fun.

My vlogs have been discovered by my "real life" per say friends which can be used and has been to piss me off. I try keep it away from Facebook.

I only tend to add people i know on Facebook in real life but I have added vloggers I have met OR speak to on a very regular basis as it's nice to communicate with like minded people on different subjects.

I use twitter and skype to communicate with motovloggers and people interested in motovlogging.

:)

I usually put my blogs on my Twitter and FB so all of my friends know I do. As for work, they know I do but I never let on what my youtube address is, although it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Luckily I don't work with any rocket scientists!

I have my camera on all the time, if people ask, I say I ride around and put them on YT :P in France none of the gits that could have given me stick talked English, so it was fine. and well at College I'll just stick most of my gear in my topcase. Never really hidden it.

I don't go out of my way to say, people just wouldn't understand however if anyone asks i tell them it's for Youtube :)

I don't keep it a secret. To me it's not a big deal even if I think they won't like it or laugh about it. This is what I like to do in my free time and whatever they think about my videos isn't going to change what I like doing. Most all the people I have ridden with know about my channel and most of them have watched at least one of my videos, generally I get positive feedback if any at all. If you are out in the open and not embarrassed at all it takes away leverage anyone would have to "poke fun"

Hey Leeds, first off:

Sorry you can't make the Brighton mate. Understandable for sure but... still...a shame matey!

Anyways, I don't broadcast it but Family found it ages ago, it was just a case of "why you got a Camera on your head Doofus?" :)

I told em why, they watch em.

Friends outside the community and work people don't have a clue...yet :)

No big deal really if they found it as I removed the vlogs where I am moaning about work and the people I work with ;)

Have two facebook accounts one for real life one for the vlogs, as for friends and family. Lot of friends know and a few work mates, but most the family know I have a camera and record and place online... but they haven't figured out the channel name or don't care.

I think its the more don't care lol

I say it's more for insurance reasons that I have a camera. I find it hard to explain to people what the concept of a motovlog is other then "its like doing a Vlog just on a motorbike" only 1 person I know, knows that I do it and thats because he's a sub of mine on YT and was the way he found out I'd got a bike.
Mostly I dont think people would understand seeing as normally I'm the guy in the background working away without being noticed ect. I keep myself to myself. I agree with Leedsrider it's something I find a little to personal to explain.

Plus everyone I know LOVES to take the piss I'm still hearing jokes from somthing that happened 4 years ago!

Very few of the people I know in RL have any clue about my vlogs. I'd like to keep it that way. My wife and kids know I motovlog, but the kids are too young to watch them. I don't do outright illegal stuff in my vlogs, but I do some stuff and say some stuff that I wouldn't want the bible thumpers or police around here to watch knowing it's me behind the camera.(like my vlog "Smells Good to Me")

I did have to gripe at my oldest son yesterday for bringing his ipod to school to show some of his friends my "Mean old man vs dirtbiker kids dad" video. I'd hate to get a call from one of his friends parents asking why their child is watching my videos with an f-bomb being dropped every few seconds. I don't cuss much in that video, but I could see them jumping from that one to another of mine that isn't as "friendly."

I've showed some friends my Crash video and my close calls video, and told people about the old man.

I have about 30 or so motovlogs that are sitting in a folder while I decide whether or not to upload them... Like the "Stopped Enough" vlog. I have lots of fat friends who would not be very happy with me if they watched that one, so it was a tuff call on whether or not to put in on my channel. I also do lots of really crazy stuff and have some pretty insane vlogs that I'll probably never upload.(like the one about the little dude in your head.. don't ask.. lol) I have a feeling the crazy stuff would be pretty popular, but it will also confirm for the world that I am in fact insane.(something I've suspected for a while now)

My question to everyone is: How much of your own vlogs to you watch. Do you just edit, upload and forget about it? I've probably watched all my vlogs about 5+ times each. Is that weird?

No, if you dont find your videos interesting no one else will. :)

I put all my videos in the blog section of essex bikers... to begin with everyone was up in arms... but after talking to quite a few of them recently apparently a hell of alot of them watch all my videos.... Some of them even say im funny.... go figure :D

Hell, I even have business type cards that I give to people if they seem interested. Having vids on YT is just part of who I am these days. It's nothing I deem any kind of secret. THAT would be weird, at least for me, to do. FB is the same. I'm just a regular guy with a camera stuck to his helmet. I do wish I was Batman though.

That's pretty much complete bullshit. I've had a fair number of videos that bore the shit out of me get a LOT of views. Several videos I was thinking of not even uploading were liked by quite a few people as well. Not liking your own stuff is actually completely normal and doesn't really mean anything.

Valid Point, I think most of videos are crap, but if i didn't have a slight interest in them,They would of never have been uploaded.

A couple of my friends know but the majority of friends and family don't know I ride around with a microphone and camera and talk to myself :) Personally I think it is better to keep it quiet, just stops stupid comments from people that think it is stupid :P
