New Toys!

G'day,
As I point out in my intro Motovlog I recently posted I was planning on moving from a contour roam to a drift hd ghost as my main camera. After a chat with a mate who knew where to get them locally, I've picked one up today and am currently setting it up on my helmet. I can already notice the quality and improved features of this camera.

Im not going to lie, i really want a drift camera. Let me know how much and if it freezes on you.

I really like the drift cameras mainly because the lens rotates for easy lining up. The one issue I find is that most people say they perform better at 30fps then at 60fps. Is that true? I currently use a GoPro Hero3 and a Sony As100v and both are great in full 1080p 60fps. I've just been thinking of getting a drift as well because it is a much more simple setup on the helmet since you just stick it on and turn the lens to make it level.

I've noticed no real performance difference between 30 and 60fps at 720p (HD Ghost doesn't do 60fps at 1080p). Is your SD card a reputable brand and genuine? The higher the resolution or frame rate the faster the data gets written, so you need a capable card of Class 10 or UHS1.

I don't know personally about the Drift cameras I was asking for an opinion. I use a class 10 sdxc with a 50mb/s write speed in both my gopro and sony and they perform amazing. I was just asking because I've heard others say negative remarks about drift which is why I'm still holding off on getting my 3rd camera.

The HD Ghost does not support SDXC to my knowlegde although check the book and the latest firmware.

If you look at Leadpin's latest he thinks GoPro have the lead on Drift, and looking at his dual Vlog with Mrs LP recently where there is mixed footage, the GoPro has greater colour saturation but to me, on my laptop, both are equal clarity, but I don't recall the resolution.

Best bet is to trawl YT and compare footages. If you have GoPro already I'd stick with GoPro for additional caneras as you know you can copy the settings and you'll have a similar colour balance between multiple angles.

You are probably right. I think the two cameras I have are probably the best you can get when it come to wanting quality video and features. I just really love how stealth the Drifts look on a helmet people don't even realize they are cameras half the time. Maybe if I can find a good drift for under $100 I'll get one just to have for vlogs. Where I live the obvious cameras gain attention from cops despite the fact that I'm on a harley and not a sport bike.

Why do they go for cameras? Onboard evidence?

Nothing to say you can't balance it up in post.

Not really sure what you are referring to with balancing in post? Camera angle? I don't have a problem with that really as I have enough parts and attachments to position my cameras about anywhere.

As for the cops I think they are just a little crooked around here to be honest. Last time I had a run in I was in my SUV which is lifted but is completely legal. The cop pulled me over for not being street legal (mud flaps, bumper height, and tinted tail lights) and ended up writing me 3 tickets after I argued his points. I was given a speeding ticket?? , one for tail lights and one for my insurance which was valid???. Long story short I took it to court and they were all dropped as I was not in the wrong. As for my motorcycle the last time I encountered a cop with my GoPro on it was at night and he took the time to both blind me with his spot light and then flash his blue lights at me as a warning all while I was simply sitting at a red light on the opposite side of the street waiting for it to turn green. I don't see the issue and I know it is not illegal to keep a sort of dash cam so I really don't know why they don't like them.

Sounds like they're bored. We have a complaints system here, although our Police system isn't as large as yours.

Balance in post - adjust saturation and colour balance in your editing package.

Ok gotcha

Yeah I think they stay bored. I don't really worry about it too much since I have them on video as being the harassing ones but it would be nice if they really didn't know they were on camera. I have friends who are cops for different regions and they all tell me that making a complaint would do no good around here since no one is actually being harmed by anything.

Fit one to your bike like a Roadhawk as an anti-cop measure. Small bullet cam type thing, maybe as a rear view and stand behind your bike once pulled.

I just may do that. Hell that could be my reasoning for buying the drift since I could easily mount it under my rear signal without it being noticeable. Although with my luck as soon as I'm prepared to protect myself the issue would no longer be there.

Roadhawk is the size of a maglite if you do need smaller.

Might want to check out the night capabilities of the cameras you shortlist.
