New "Noise Cameras" in the UK....

The UK gov is testing some new tech to clamp down on noisy bikes and cars.... I am def going to be keeping an ear to the ground on this one. The gov still hasn't stated what the levels are which is worrying.... as is this quote from the linked article:

It could also help to catch those who rev car or motorcycles engines beyond legal limits

What the hell are the maximum "legal" RPM I am allowed to use?

I really hope they don't go through with that it'd set an awful precedent. And what about older bikes etc? My magna is loud as all hell and has a stock exhaust

I bet it will be based on something like parts of the US have for law enforcement. A set of dB based on distance from the bike and speed.

So if the rider exceeds the dB at a set speed the camera snaps a picture.

What could be a defense would be lack of clarity on weight on the bike and incline of going up hill; however surely the science behind it will have that laid out.

Be interesting due to the fact other other noises near the microphone. Also as Hippo says I'm unaware of a set in stone limit. I've seen advisories on MOT's for a loud exhausts but again never a fail

I think if a community has designated quite hours, say in a residential neighborhood after 10 or 11pm a noise ordinance can be in place, but this - a bike noise law - seems hard to clarify if not enforce if there's always a din of background noise, or noise creation events like a plane passing overhead, or the passing of a train/subway. How do you separate a bike from the environment it's in?

All hogwash! Luckily I have never had to deal with this asinine law. And I love rev bombing in tunnels and under the first bridge I pass whenever I jump on the bike.

And considering doing this from the front of a moving vehicle with people who aren't trained to do only this exact task is going to backfire. Measuring sound isn't like oh, hey thats loud lets meas.... oh their gone. Plus targeting while moving is a mess. The only way to get a proper level reading is with measured distance with two fixed objects.

They installed one over here on one of the main roads.

It kept getting "damaged" so they took it away.

I would be damaging them too if they were put up around here. Fortunately there isn't anything like this. We do have a law saying the if you are running an aftermarket exhaust then it has to be under X decibels even if stock would be higher than that. I've never heard of it being enforced though. We all run straight pipe trucks that shake the ground everywhere they go. Pretty much as long as your car is registered and insured cops don't bother you. I've had cops behind me while I don't have any brake lights and didn't get pulled over.

These "decibel cameras" got introduced to us here in Holland as wel this year. I have not yet come across one but i bet they will get "damaged" aswel since the bikers here are really fed up with the police and their extra surveiliance on exhaust sounds and db killers. It was so bad that last year almost every week they had cops just pulling over sportsbikes especially and do db tests. Whether they had stocl exhaust or not.

I read a related article on Revzilla. It isn't the people that ride normal that will ruin it for all motorcyclists it is the Aholes that drive by when everyone is supposed to be sleeping and rev the bike/car up and shake the windows. This also is a problem in the US with Trucks and the stove pipe stacks in the bed as well as the hot rod little cars with 5 inch exhaust pipes that sound like full on race bikes. I understand that people want to make their bikes and cars/trucks sound cool but when your in a neighborhood at 2am and your revving the shit out of the motor it is majorly annoying. As a biker I'm all for being able to do what you want to your bike but some common courtesy is required if we want to continue to mod in the future. Problem is there are always a few rotten apples in the bunch! And when you see some bikers posting on the comments of people against this leaving death threats it just makes things worse. As long as someone isn't revving their engine in front of my house at 2am pipe it all you want!

The problem is shift work because some folks work all night and sleep during the day.

We do not help the cause when manufacturers have names for mufflers like this

Excellent film! hahahaha

Vladislav: Leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet!

Viago: What are you bidding on?

Vladislav: I am bidding on a table.

Seriously though, I think that the obnoxiously bright head light issue needs to be addressed before noise. Literally cannot see when I catch some of these LED's head on and have to hope that my eyes adjust back quickly enough to not die.

Or how about enforcing laws on the books such as speeding, driving in the passing lane but not passing, driving below the minimum speed on the highway, tailgating, unsafe lane changes, failure to use a signal while turning/changing lanes and texting while driving?

@LoneWolfer

Great film and a really good TV show.

I loved Vladislav explaining that he never ages so that is why he looks 16 years old. Life for a 16 year old was rougher back then...

...now back to the discussion -
Your great point , "Or how about enforcing laws on the books such as speeding, driving in the passing lane but not passing, driving below the minimum speed on the highway, tailgating, unsafe lane changes, failure to use a signal while turning/changing lanes and texting while driving?"

Shush! You are going to get them to build more robots/AI to enforce all that!
