Perfect Dark for the N64 was a great opener for FPS gaming in my opinion.
DK64 was another fantastic game that I spent way too many hours playing.
Gran Turismo (the original) for the PlayStation was the starter for my racing games.
Chrono Trigger for the SNES was another game that consumed too many hours away from my life, great RPG!!
Starcraft! Great PC RTS game!!

Nice choice on the number one, brings back good memories. My favorite is probably The Last of Us that came out a couple of years ago, it's like a movie. Great story, awesome visuals and has good suspense. A blast to play, you should check it out if you're into that sort of game.

Dungeon Keeper - One of the best 'god' games/simulators ever and still has a cult following for it to this day. Made by Bullfrog before EA bought them out.
Diablo 2 - Clickfest hack and slack. The game was huge, with so much diversity and really set the stage for how to handle item drops for games up to this day.
Half Life - This game changed ever FPS and showed gamers how good a scripted story, ground breaking graphics and advanced AI could entirely turn over your gaming experience.
Defence of the Ancients - Yes this was a custom map/mod for Warcraft 3 but while this map didn't invent the MOBA format, it certainly made it mainstream and gain traction. Today we see so many flavours of MOBA it is awesome. Probably my favourite style of game.
Assassin's Creed - The first game was unique and had so much style. The story was certainly different. The charm with the game was these new mechanics that everyone wanted in GTA, climbing and parkour. The following games of the series are sometimes a big hit and sometimes a big miss but I play them all.

I'll keep my list to within the 2000s.. CS 1.6, WoW (Vanilla, BC, WotLK.. all other xpacs I've played but not enjoyed as much). Dota, pre-f2p Heroes of Newerth, Mario Kart 8, Team fortress 2, Hearthstone, Batman Arkham City, Half Life and recently Far Cry 3.

The Saboteur was so much fun, the black and white then switch to color after you liberated a zone was cool. Dirt is also amazeballs, played that game for hr's...
