I thought I had already replied here, but apparently not.
I had this realizationg that I would have to face this sooner or later.
There was also a period where I clung to "my decade's" music like crazy.
I find it easier now to just listen to what's on the radio and determine on a song by song basis what I like without polluting my opinion with a silly "all new music sucks" mentality.
This way, new music can also be my music.
People only seem to remember the enduring hits from their generation. The pop drivel, and the one-hit wonders and the fly-by-nights are mostly forgotten and their music has been filtered out by curators.
In this regard, we only listen to the great stuff that came out of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s etc. All the garbage was firmly tossed there.
Unfortunately those filters don't come into place for at least a few years which makes it seem like there's a lot more garbage on the radio than there was back then.
The truth is, there's always been garbage on the radio, and the ratio of music that was garbage to really great music has largely stayed the same.
Here's a test. Go to a record store and browse through the used records section. Keep note of how many records from "your musical decade" you would actually purchase. This is a bit skewed, because most often people are going to sell their junk records. But you will still be surprised by how many of them there are if you are paying attention.
