Hi Guys,

I recently watched the KONY 2012 clip as a lot would have. I am really not interested in the argument side of that. What I am interested in is how to make those moving images they had. I have no idea what they are called and any googling 'moving images kony 2012 will just come up with things about the campaign and arguments for and against.

You may remember them, if not google KONY 2012 and look it up. They will take a still image of say Kony for example and whilst the subject remains fixed the background moves around them - it gives the picture a much better/emotive feel than a simple still image you would normally use.

Any ideas on what this is called or how to do it?

Windows movie maker does this on pan and zoom :/ no idea how to control it though.

Yeah its not a standard pan and zoom.

http://youtu.be/Y4MnpzG5Sqc?t=28m6s - watch it there. I have set the link up to show you exactly where it is. All I can think is that they have 2 images, and the subject is superimposed on a blurred background. Te background moves behind the subject to create an illusion as such but I don't think it is that simple. I think there is also a perspective change going on.

To get the same basic effect you'll need a background image and a separate image of your subject with a transparent background. Pan and zoom the background and then pan and zoom the subject at a different speed and angle and you'll get the same basic effect. It looks like they've also done a very slight 3D spin on the subject images. Its very subtle but you can see that the images spin to the sides very slightly.

I'm planning on doing an intro video later with my bike and maybe myself as the subject with this effect. I actually wanted to do it after seeing a tv show called Billy the Exterminator that did it in their opening credits. They also have some little graphics that pop up but that seemed a little cheesy.

It's going to be a while before I'll have a chance to make my intro but after I do if you like it let me know and I'll do a tutorial on how to achieve the effect.

Ahh cheers, yeah sounds like you are onto it.

What software were you planning on using?

I am going to have a crack with After effects - I don't know how to work the 3d perspective with that though.

I'll be using final cut pro but the same technique will work in any decent editor. I honestly think the 3d effect might be easier in after effects but even without that it should still look pretty good.

Keep an eye on my channel. I hope to get my intro done in the next few weeks if possible.

2 or 3 images overlayed on each other, told to go separate ways

simple once u know what and how to do it

Hi guys, not that simple.

It seems you have 2-3 images in a program that allows you to place them in 3d space, then you can manipulate the camera to flow sort of around and towards the camera which makes a 2d image seem 3d. I tried with just 2 images going separate ways, looks cool, but isn't what they put in Kony. The above link isn't the best tutorial - you can do it in after effects, using displacement maps - from what I am learning.

There is also a feature in After Effects called displacement map, works with only one image. Gives that 'fake' 3D effect, just learned it myself and its rather cool and not that hard.

Cheers for the replies guys, you are right as per above the link to that tutorial is great. I had a crack at it but TBH I couldn't make it look good enough with the images that I had to warrant using it for the project I wanted to. I am going to go down a different angle instead to try and make it look more professional. To do this and for it to look good, you really need very, very high quality digital photos.
