And their are 2 theory tests.
Bike tests in the uk go like this
CBT - ride up to a 125cc motorbike
A2 liecence (what im on with now) can ride anything as long as its 49bhp
Full access (must be 23 years old) ride any bike any cc

That's interesting. The test I took was a joke and proved nothing about if I could ride or not. I grew up around it so I can ride well but I think this is the reason we have so many ignorant riders in the USA. They should swap us to the same system it would really cut down on the immature kids.
I agree. The same thing should go for the USA. I'm sure all the young guys will disagree with me but I think it would be safer as well.

It is a good system but they charge you a fucking bomb for it and it means your stupidly restricted to what bike you can ride till your 23 which isnt a bad thing but like my instructor said to me, i could jump on any bike and ride it, yet i still have to be restricted purely due to my age not my riding skills.

Car and motorbike license are separate.
You do a test to get your learners. You either wait 6 months to do the assessment via government or do a Q Ride in QLD where you spend half a day being assessed.
Once passed you get your LAMS license which let's you ride LAMS approved bikes. (power ratio)
12 months later you can do an R assessment which let's you ride anything.

I agree that some people have the ability to ride anything at younger ages but I think there is nothing wrong with having to wait. As long as your bike will do the speed limits and get you where you want then no need to jump on something overly powerful. Everyone makes little mistakes when gaining experience as a rider and it's better to make them on a bike with less power that may not cause you to crash so you can learn from them rather then have something with too much torque that leads to a bad accident. For example when I was learning to ride luckily I was on a buddies 250cc and when I downshifted at too high of rpms the lerch of the bike tire wasn't enough to throw me off but I knew next time how to avoid it had it been a bigger bike it may have thrown me straight into the asphalt. I wouldn't have thought this when I was younger but now looking back it makes sense and I'm only 25.
The cost does seem high but again that just keeps more immature idiots off of bikes.
In the USA we have separate licenses for cars and bikes too but for each all that is required is a short test on a computer and then you basically drive around the block and that's it. I even have a commercial license and the same thing went for it aside from some extra backing maneuver testing.

The tests in the US worry me, as people will be on the roads who really have no right to be.
I think in Switzerland anyone migrating here from the US has to take their tests again locally to get a Swiss licence as the standards are so low. Almost any other country can migrate their licence directly.
