Laptop Upgrade Advice

Looking to get a new laptop I really like the macbook pro but is it really worth the money?

I want something powerful enough for video editing but don't want to break the bank.

Any recomendations would help I am a Macbook pro fan but I am open to PC if the price is better with some insane specs. I want speed and want to be able to render some decent video edits without lag during edit.

You'll get more spec for money by buying a PC, but the entry level retina mbp has a 2.7K screen...

I had the same thoughts a year ago, but not for editing, and settled on a mac as I know plentybof people with old macs, and not many with old pcs. As to how my mac will deal with video in 5 years time is another matter though.

Thats what I was thinking too. It's not like I do full feature film edits I just want to edit gopro and drift videos without lag. I use to have macbook back before the pro version became so big and loved it. I may just go with a new mbp with i5 since that should be plenty to put together youtube vids. I like PC too but there seem to be way too many variables with them and when stacked against a mbp running same specs the mac seems to handle media better imho

My late 2013 entry retina mbp does ok at 1080/60. I use fcpx, and it can take a little time with a few 4GB files in there especially with layering. If you can upspec the memory and processor to the next one up ($2-300), it would probably be worthwhile, but not necessary unless you're in a blistering hurry to do stuff. I cocked up the current project as i let it optimise, copy and analyse nearly an hour of raw footage, and the render down is taking more time than usual, but I also managed to pull the external it's using too...

Yeah the upgrade may not be necessary it's not render times that bother me when I'm done editing. What bothers me is the current computer I have will crash if you make too many adjustments or mods to the video or if you have too many layers. The other issue is I cannot play back the footage during edit because the computer isn't powerful enough to play it showing the changes

If you really don't want to break the bank, why not get a newer MBP off of eBay or Craigslist :o ??? It costs less and heck, even the older ones are powerful :p . I'm still using a 2007 MBP for everyday things ;) .

Just a thought :) .....

I got the new MacBookPro in September and am super impressed. The solid stater processor is unbelievably fast. It has reduced my editing, importing, rendering and even uploading time to a tenth of what it was on an older MacBookPro that had a non solid state processor

It is also so fast you can start editing immediately on a file being imported.

I love using my macbook for almost everything but editing videos. lol. I still prefer sony vegas, used it for so long I only get frustrated with premier and the like

Yeah I have been looking at those just don't want to drop $1500+ on a new laptop if I can get something just as powerful at half that. It is tempting I do miss my old mbp.

I like sony vegas too but I have no problem using other programs. I have a dell xps series that is a little older and it runs sony vegas decently until I start doing some heavy layering. Plus I want a laptop so I can work on stuff away from the desk as my xps is desktop

Just to let you guys know, Macbooks are becoming increasingly obsolete as Apple is taking on tablets. Do yourself a favor and buy a PC.

If that was the case the whole laptop market would be under threat, regardless of manufacturer or operating system.

I can see tablets may affect the netbook market, as in small screen for social media sat on the sofa market, but for anything else where a reasonable screen and decent text input is involved, the laptop will be king.

Yes exactly, the laptop market is being threatened. Mac however is fueling this switch towards netbooks, tablets, and crossovers. Now ofc were still looking probably at least 5 years out, and laptops will still be around; production will just be slowed. I've attached an article with more info and speculations.

I have no use for a tablet, and of all the people I know, none could dispense with a laptop in favour of a tablet.

I'll read that link on the laptop later as I'm on my phone, but I still maintain that laptop use will not be significantly dented, but 10"-11"netbooks will as the only thing that sold them was size.

One friend of mine was a netbook user, he bought a tablet, when his netbook died, he bought a 15" laptop as a main computer.

Tablets just can't do what computers can do, they're not suitable for heavy use. I don't see people turning to desktop machines unless they have a need, so the household computer will remain a laptop IMO.

Well remember that full Windows tablets like the Surface and Yoga devices are massively growing in popularity, and he may have a point about the standard laptop dying out soon.
