How Do You Guys Record Yourself?

Hey pretty new here so sorry if this is obvious!

I want to have two angles in my motovlogs. Currently I have a chin mount on my helmet and a camera for that to record my POV.

I would like another camera to record facing me but have no idea how or where to mount it? Also how do you sync audio between cameras?

Handle bars work well for mounting another camera.

Generally the audio you get from the second camera is nothing but noise anyway. I rarely use any of it. Syncing video is another matter all together.

I've only vlogged once using two cameras so far. I had a cheap sports camera from ebay that cost about £35. I mounted it on the mirror of the bike. The image was very shaky because of the vibration at some engine speeds.

Syncing the two video files was a nightmare. I presume because they were different makes of camera. I found that the cheap camera recorded slightly faster than the drift ghost, so was constantly using lamp posts, trees, signs etc to re-sync the video during the editing process.

Audio was taken from the drift ghost as I was using the mic for the vlog.

The finished vlog looks ok, but since I haven't run two cameras!

As far as mounting the camera. I would suggest the handlebar. You need to mount it as close to the suspension part of the bike as you possibly can to eliminate vibration. I've run a rearward camera before when I was on L plates which was mounted on the swingarm, and this didn't suffer any vibration.

Looks like a lot of headache! Ill hunt around and see if I can find anything that will work well with me Thanks a lot!

Syncing cameras is easy, face the two together and clap.

Not sure about them running different rates, but as long they're both the same, or one is double the other in a reasonable editor should be OK

I've tested out two angles before. I used the ram ball mount to mount a go pro session in front of my dash and combined it with the go pro 3+ black on the chin.

As for syncing i just make sure to do the claps at the start in view of both cameras and then final cut pro X does the rest for me with its multi cam mode.

I have used a pole extension for the GoPro on my helmet. that way i was recording my face. I dont have 2 Cameras, so i just rode the same road twice and cut togehter the footage. cheapo i know

I haven't tried it yet, but I'll be mounting my spare camera to the underside of my screen. Will be interesting to experiment with new camera angles. Also thinking about mounting it either on the swingarm or low down on the seat fairing facing backwards

Syncing cameras and audio isn't hard after you have done it a few times. I run a separate audio recorder from my GoPro and sync them up in editing. So if you're running multiple cameras its only one more step for the setup in your editing.

Your helmet mounted camera's audio is usually the default audio source, everything else will sync up to your primary one, either press your horn to have an audio reference point for all your cameras, or do something that makes a loud sound for sync up later during edits.

If you want to get audio from different cameras when changing angles this way still works as well.

I just did this for the first time last night. Easy once you know what to look for. After starting my camera and audio recorder (iPhone with earbuds stuffed into my helmet ) I clapped my hands. In editing, if you can see the waveforms in your audio tracks, you can find the spike of your clap, then match that to the video frame where your hands come together. Bam, your audio is synced despite coming from two separate devices.

All that said, I'm still looking forward to my mic arriving so I can plug it right into my GoPro and save myself the hassle.

I have a GoPro hero3+ and the mic port is the same port you use to download videos to a computer. I have heard of these ports going bad because of excessive use. This is why I don't use the GoPro mic. I don't know how common it is but I'm not willing to take the chance. Just some FYI.

Good to know - I'll keep that in mind! Worst case, it'll be an excuse to upgrade to a newer camera.
