Help With Budget Minded Setup

Hey everyone, new here and looking to get myself set up with an action cam by the end of the week. I'm not necessarily going to motovlog, but want to video my motorcycle rides.

With that said, I don't need the best or most expensive setup, just something decent.

I've seen a bunch of those 4k gopro knockoffs for around $50 or so and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on a setup.

Few things I'd like to have: gopro accessorie compatible, removable battery, and hookup for external mic.

Any input appreciated.

If you want a great quality camera for a good price I would suggest a Replay XD 1080.

It's super effing tiny and easy to mount. Only downfall is it's an internal battery meaning that you have to charge it all the time and can't take extra batteries with you. It clocks in at $140 USD so it's not a huge bank breaker. Or I would suggest trying to find a Hero 3 Black or Hero 4 Silver second hand.

That looks sweet, only downside like you mentioned was the non-removable battery.

I was also looking at the gitup git2, I may go with that.

Yea that's the only big downfall. The smallness of the camera is what makes it so great though!

I haven't heard of the ones that you mentioned, but if you do your research and watch videos made with them then I would say go for it!

You are better off buying a used gopro or a refurbished gopro. I have a friend who bought the gitup git 2 and only used it one time before buying a refurbished gopro that he uses now.

Sometimes trying to not buy a real gopro to save money will actually cost you more when you aren't happy with it and have to buy twice.

Another option is something like a Drift HD or Drift HD Ghost they can be had for decent prices these days.

I've personally used Sony Action Cams, 3 different gopros, and a drift hd ghost. It all comes down to what you actually want out of it.

Tis true. I really think GoPro is the only way to really go if you can snag one at a good price point.

If you want a budget cam, no need to go for a unit that shoots "4K". Most motovloggers are quite happy sticking to 1080p. Better get a high quality 1080p cam then a low quality 4k unit (which is gonna be up scaled anyways). People have good results with the SJcams and they are cheap. It depends what do you expect from it. Personally I went with a Garmin Virb Ultra 30 (Hero 5 price range), mostly because it can be connected to a bluetooth mic.

I searched craigslist a lot, all over the states. Theres a ton of them out there, just have to find the right one in the right price range. Got my Hero4 black with extra cases, LCD backpack and other mounts for $220 shipped. Good luck!

Strongly recommend it.

I use it for my videos. If you are uploading to youtube, the camera will NOT be your bottleneck.

Personally, don't go with the Replay XD mini. You can consider the Replay XD Prime. Reason, XD mini does not have wide angle and wi-fi to sync with your phone to check the angle. Prime has the wide angle, and wi-fi to sync. However there is some issue with their app not running properly on the latest versions of android. They have external mic but it must have it's own power source for the mic. The mic is hard to get right for speech without wind noise.

All in all, to start off, the Replay is going to be a bit of a hassle to fine tune. Better off getting a used Hero3+ or Hero4, not sure about other brands, can't comment.
