Head shake looks worse with more modern cameras!

I have noticed that we are losing our field of view with the newer cameras. The head turning is a lot more noticeable because of it despite built in stabilization!

Here is my Hero 4 Silver at 1080p60 uploaded in 2016 without using the trick. I added just a enough stabilization when editing to eliminate the Harley vibration that happens near idle.

Here is 1080p60 on Hero 8 Black with stabilization on.

Both were shot with Superview. Notice the big reduction in the field of view? So a turn of the head with a larger field of view is less of a distraction than a turn of the head when the field of view is narrow.

Just something I noticed. Which looks better and why?

But yup, we lose resolution with stabilisation, the worst one I have seen from it is on the new Drift Ghost cameras which already have a very narrow FOV.

Superview is too warped and makes people look fat. Too wide field of view makes everything look too far away. Very happy with my Action 3.
Thanks for the input but I am not worried about filming people when riding. :p

As far as brands - this ain't about that.

As far as distance. I believe that is common since many action cameras do not have the same abilities as camcorders or SLRs. So we get a compromise in keeping everything in focus at once.

I think it comes down to where the stabilization is coming from. In-camera stabilization works well, but does narrow the FOV quite a bit. This is one reason I like the Max Lens Mod for Hero 9/10/11/12 - I don't think it crops in as far, but keeps the image quite stable. The camera also has to predict if and how much the camera is going to move next, so I think it defaults to a narrower FOV for this as well.

If you're doing stabilization in post, you can tweak how far it'll crop in, how smooth the footage has to be, etc. [in Davinci Resolve, at least].

Just my $.02 on it.

One of the features of the Hero 12 I liked the sound of was the adaptive stabilisation, where IIRC, it only narrows the FOV to add stabilisation when needed, but then widens out to full resolution when things stabilise. Not seen how well it works as no intention of getting the camera so not researched it. Mind you, saying that... I had no intention of buying an Insta360 Go camera, but I recently found myself ordering one of those :D

That's something I need to test out more... but so far I haven't even noticed it working in the few times I had the regular lens on it. That AutoBoost feature is turned off when you're running a Max Lens Mod.

Think that’s the way forward(360 cam) it’s by far the most popular camera on Insta/TT so it’s very versatile for all the socials

360 cams are great... but the image quality just isn't there. At best, it looks like 1080 resolution once it's reframed. Zoom in and it's a blurry mess.

I think when 360 cams get to 8k or so, they'll be closer to 2.7k, which IMO is a much better image than 1080.

I was tinkering with some footage today and just at idle the built in stabilization cut a whole lot out the peripheral vision.

Who rides just focusing to the edge of our mirrors?

Then I looked at some with stabilization off on the camera and only 5 on stabilization in edit. The field of view was more narrow that on the 8 than the 4.

I am going to do a few more tests. It is a shame no matter brand camera I look at footage from on YouTube - it seems built in stabilization makes the rider look like they are sitting way closer to the bars than they really are. Which can be a bit comical to think of someone being a geek riding on their fuel tank.

The Insta360 Go is not a 360 camera, but I do love my Insta360 One X2 as well... I really should use it more in my vlogs. The Insta360 Go3 I just got isn't really for my motovlogging content, although I am sure I will use it from time to time, it is more for my RC stuff if I ever get that channel and content going.

Doesn't it really show only when the moving is really shaky? Try dirtbiking down the stairs or something...

Lots of onboard video, from deep mud, coming then?
I jogged with it... and couldn't tell... and I wasn't jogging more than about 10ft or I'd wear myself out. I might have to put it on my helmet with a regular lens [THE HORROR!] and go for a quick ride.

What was the field of view when compared to without using stabilization?

If it is the same I may get a push start motorcycle.;)

I dunno, I only did it once :D

If I get a "good knee" day, I can try again. Or, I can put it on the bike and ride.
