Green screen

Has anyone on here done any Chroma Key editing? I've been playing around with it a bit but I am having trouble getting g

HAHA. Ok not having any luck with using my phone for this forum. Sorry about that. I can't seem to get good separation between the subject (me) and the background. I've been using Sony vegas 12. Not sure if it is a lighting issue or if I would have better luck using photoshop.

The most important thing in chroma keying is lighting. You need a really bright light on the green screen and you need lights hitting the subject from the back so the green doesn't reflect onto the subject around the edges. I use really bright halogen shop lights to light the screen and 4 led lights on my subjects.

Ok thanks. Had everything right but back lighting on the subject. I will keep playing with it. Was planning on using it for a follow up video. Do you know how far the subject should be from the screen or does it matter. Probably far enough to not cast a shadow.

There are two things to consider. You don't want a shadow on the screen but just as important, maybe more important, you don't want the green reflecting onto the subject. It's hard to see in person but on camera you'll see a green tint around the edges of the subject. You may not see it until you mask out the green screen but then it's really clear if you have green around the edges. Both back lighting the subject and moving away from the screen can help eliminate the green edges

I wouldn't put the subject closer than about 4 feet but that still may be too close depending on the lighting.

I'll give it a shot. Thanks again for being so helpful.
An alternative would be to try rotoscoping. Not sure if Vagas does that, but I've done it a few times and it worked fairly well.
Killer on CPU, but decent results afterwards (and I didn't need a greenscreen)

I've been venturing into it as well.

Techmoan did a piece on green screen using iMovie if anyone is interested.

Can't you set any colour to be the mask? In the "old days" they used to use a blue screen.

Yes, Blue and green are used because it's not a color in the human skin (sorry Hulk).

I'm impressed at the amount of motovloggers with green screen knowledge.

I assumed that it was an area motovloggers wouldn't be familiar with.

Some Great information here. I use to work with a Green Screen and Blue Screen years back for making commercials. Think I may get back into it for Motorvlogging as I am going to do some Video Production on my youtube.
