Gopro's New Hero4 Session - Have They Jumped The Shark?

I guess it depends where you live, because here the Sony is consistently cheaper.. 599 vs 679 at mx store, 489 vs 649 at cambuy, 476 vs 599 at digidirect. And none of those gopros come with a remote.
So "at a given price point" as you said earlier, the fdrx1000v is really competing with the hero 4 silver (4k @ 15fps), or maybe even the hero 3 black.
Your comparison of image quality is questionable also. The h4B can record at 60mb/s (the silver at 45mb/s) but the sony is 100mb/s. The internet is full of arguments about that though.
Yes those other models are of a much lower standard, but at much less cost. In fact, the shotbox is the same price as the basic hero+lcd.
Im still with a ghost. I'd like a gopro, but a bit out of my budget, especially when I would have to buy all the mounts as well.
So maybe its not "Wow that is so wrong" and more like "Arguable because I didnt really mean at a cheaper price point than the comparative GoPro"

Sorry if I came off sounding a little frosty, I didn’t mean to at all :)

After a quick search I easily found a Hero 4 Black on an Australian site for $550 with free shipping which is sitting somewhere in between all of the prices you gave once you account for shipping costs.
Regardless I don’t think that using Australian prices is a good comparison at all due to all kinds of costs like import tax, international shipping etc.
Using US prices they cost the same.

I apologize for my mistake about the included remote, I have a 3+ black and just assumed they would continue including the remote for free.
Seems like kind of a dick move on GoPros part that they don’t anymore.

The Silver isn’t competing with the X1000V due to it being $100 cheaper.

As for image quality, bitrate is kind of like megapixels, nice to have more of them but not at all representative of the final output quality. Reviewers have said that the H4B retains more image detail than the Sony which tends to over compress colors in order to make the picture more vivid and sharp which can easily be achieved in post with GoPro footage if that’s the look you’re after. Not all cameras are created equal which is why when you buy a “high bitrate 1080p” camera from china it looks like garbage compared to a GoPro. There are so many factors at play and GoPro has excellent video quality compared to other makers.

Like I said, other manufacturers won’t be able to beat GoPro until they can put up a comparable product at a lower price. I would rather have a H4S over that weird Panasonic one, or the Shotbox for that matter. At the lowest end of the spectrum is the Hero for $130 which I would much rather have than any other camera in that price range as it retains a lot of features like Superview and really good waterproofing and it still has awesome image quality.

If you’d like to switch to GoPro then I would suggest looking at importing one which is dead easy and would probably save you quite a bit compared to buying local in Australia. Official GoPro mounts are admittedly quite expensive however they do have some good ones like the helmet front mount which is the best action cam mount I’ve ever come across. The good thing about GoPros widespread use is that 3rd party mounts are a dime a dozen like this. Also check out Aliexpress for some cheap mounts, I’ve bought quite a few from there and they’re usually between 0.5 and 3 dollars with free shipping worldwide.

You can’t just look at price when comparing products, like I’ve said a few times already you have to look at value.
If you were comparing two cars and reviews said that one of them was 3x as good as the other one but it only cost 1.5x as much then it is obviously the better choice.
That is the situation GoPro is in with a lot of these cheap action cameras and most of the time they are the better choice.

this is aimed at people who just upload crap footage and lay music over it...not for people who enjoy high quality

iirc this is the same shape apple has been working on for their camera as well
