So what Hero3 are people ordering? I'm very tempted by a new camera but I can't afford the Black edition where as the white version which is more affordable only offers 'consumer grade' low light levels and many other downgraded features. Annoys me that they charge $1 to £1 for the white one too!

i tried getting my american family to buy it for me as its £110 cheaper if you buy it in america compared to here but ive gone for the black edition as my gopro hd hero has gotten a bit old. i recommend you go for the middle option to be honest.

.....All this talk of size being so much smaller, I can't find anywhere a photo of both the Hero 2 vs the Hero 3, side by side. Anyone got a picture?.......
Check this video from GoPro @ 30 seconds, they compare them side by side.

Why would I upgrade to a Gopro Hero 3?

2.7k at 30fps: Now the camera can do 4k, but only at 12 frames per second. Anything slower than 24fps is garbage to the human eye. So even though it can do 4k, it's a useless 4k to me since I pine for smooth video and crisp image quality. BUT 2.7k is better than the 1080 I'm shooting at now. If you see yourself trying to make beautiful video footage with the highest quality resolution available under $500, its a good buy.

1080p at 120 fps: Can you say super slowmo? Goodbye twixtor! This was one of the biggest positives for me. Current cameras can do 60fps, but not at 1080. Now you'll have a camera that is shooting at highest youtube quality at 120 frames a second. So if you were to slow that footage down to 25% speed, it would still play at 30 frames. Damn that is sweet.

Built in wifi + remote: Hero 2 wifi and remote are both individual upgrades you will have to purchase. And if you ever wanted to shoot multiple cameras simultaneously on your bike, you'd either have to manually trigger them all, OR spend your entire paycheck to get all the wifi addons and new housings for each camera and sync them up. PEE U. With the new cams, they can sync to the same remote without any additional purchases besides the new camera itself. Also, it works with the iPhone app without any additional purchases, so you can see your camera view live, plus control it without having to purchase a screen or wifi adapter for it.

I went and pre-ordered the black edition. Funny thing is, I'm keeping my Hero 2 as my helmet cam, and using the Hero 3 as the action angle camera. I'll do a comparison when I get it in hand.

So what are you trying to say? That the GoPro Hero2 is a better buy and camera?

I don't know about you guys and gals, but I'm honestly going to wait for the price to come down a bit before I buy the Hero 3... or at least until I get some editing software that can handle 1080p without imploding in on itself.

It's not the software it's the computer. Each video editing suite is going to be similar in the way they handle large files and the calculations needed.

The computer itself is fine. It is the editing suite when it is 4 years out of date, the only means of exporting in 1080p is to manually configure every parameter pertaining to the export, and one error results in a default 240p output and subsequently unwatchable footage. Not really a surprise when the software support ended for the product two years ago. Beyond that though, the purchase price of the Hero3 is a bit of a turn off. The point I was trying to make is I would rather invest that money towards better software before worrying about replacing or supplementing my Hero2 :)

Nay, sorry if I was misleading in anyway. I was endorsing the 3 and listing reasons why I personally wanted to upgrade to the 3.
Using my two as my main vlogging camera makes total sense. My main camera will rest in the helmet mount, which shows my hands and handlebars.
I'll be using the 3 as my action camera, mounted somewhere more interesting with a better view of the passing scenery while shooting 1080 x 60fps.
I don't think it's necessary to show my hands shifting gears in super slowmo, so the 2 will remain my helmet cam.
My 3 came in today, I'll test it out this weekend.

I was just browsing the GoPro website and I just can't figure something out.

How is THIS different than the three EXATCLY same parts from THIS?

Or am I missing something :?:

Thanks Switchbiker for the comparison link.

BonnyJohnny. I use a company called http://www.shipito.com/ for buying American products that are not allowed to be sold outside of the states. I have saved myself 1000's of dollars on camping/motorbike gear this way as Aussie retail markups are generally huge.

You could use it to order your Hero3 - but obviously warranty issues are going to be more of a pain in the backside to deal with.
