GoPro filenames and awkward sorting

Why can't it be just numbers in order, like majority of cameras do?
Garmin has gone the route that if clip exceeds maximum length, it just creates a new one with the same name but adds -2 -3 -4 etc at the end.

But it would make more sense if it was
GH0100036
GH0100037
GH0100038
press stop recording,. record something new
GH0200036
GH0200037

etc.
The front numbers switching around should be something small and easy to change.
Right, I agree... Windows doesn't arrange them that way. Following your example, GoPro should output these filenames:

GH0003601
GH0003602
GH0003603

stop/start recording...

GH0003701
GH0003702

And having worked on many programs in my career, my file naming conventions ALWAYS follow the example I gave above, for ease of sorting. It would be an easy change for them to make.

I think most people end up with something more akin to this:

GH0100036
GH0100037
GH0100038
GH0100039
GH0100040
GH0100041

All with shorter lengths, not requiring segmentation.

Surely this could be something easily fixed with a firmware update?

They could even make it an option in the settings.
Option 1 (default) traditional gopro naming convention
Option 2: (as described above but we'd need o come up with a suitably trendy sounding name, Something like 2022 convention, or contemporary or advanced or ?? protocol)

If we could get something suitably worded so its absolutely clear what we are seeking, we could
1. Submit that as a suggestion to GoPro
2. Create a petition for others to support to add numbers and thus demonstrate to GoPro its not just a few grumpy forum users, but rather lots of grumpy GoPro owners.

@LandyVlad for President 2024! Let's do it! Also, it could be a GoPro Labs thing... that would make it quite easy for those who want to opt into it, to do so.

Hmm. I think I'l pass on the president thing - based on the last couple you have it well under control ROFLMAO

As I'm not a current gopro owner I'm not best placed to action this though.

I might suggest those who make videos about making videos (cough cough some motovloggers) might like to mention this in their vids - might also be a way of promoting some discussion in comments.

[cough cough] I smell a RANT video coming on! That, or dinner is coming back to haunt me!

Great idea :D SOMEONE should run with it ;)

There was a script somebody made a few months ago named Dohpro or something similar. I never tried it, but it would be a solution if you need it.
I'd rather see GoPro either change the naming convention or give us options for filename templates.

I was just watching a video on YT [I think it was Bradley Manning testing cameras for overheating] and in it, he mentioned that 75% of all GoPro recordings are under 1m10s long... and IIRC, that was FROM GoPro's stats.

We as motovloggers are surely a rare bunch then, recording for 90+ minutes at a time.

Wow, hah most of mine go up to the maximum file size at just over 11 minutes!

Me too! I am currently running a battery test on the Hero 9 and 10... those will be MANY full-length segments.

On my rides, I typically get 5-25 full-length segments. It's a PITA to organize them all sometimes.
