Go Pro Microphone

Hi there,

I've recently brought myself a gopro hero 3+ Black edition and wanted to get my mic setup..

However with the waterproof case on (or any case in that matter) It blocks the port for me to plug it in.

Can anyone recommend how I go about setting this up so I can plug it in but still keeping it water tight (Living in sunny old England so really need to be sure it's water tight.)

Cheers!

Dan, does this still keep the case waterproof (Obv not the hole part but will it affect it..) We get a lot of rain over in England and dont wanna waste my money :/

I used a rubber band and twisted it round the adapter. I'm in the UK as well :)

However. I don't use my Gopro for voice videos anymore, I use the drift

I can't remember what its called, but there is a solution which can make the hole air tight. Drill a hole into the casing and feed your adapter/cord through it then use the solution to block the hole. You can't remove the adapter or cord but thats the only way to make it 100% I think.

Thanks! another usefull tip that I may put into action. My only problem with that idea would be that it will permantly be plugged in and I couldn't get the gopro out... :( Thanks though!

I have the skeleton case, ive ridden in rain with the camera and its fine, but thats cause i don't really care about my hero3+ its going to die sooner or late me thinks. There is a case you can get made for the Mic input, If you do solder a hole in the side, use Blu-tack to gap the hole, this will stop water getting in.

Ah thanks for the advice there ariderslife... I've also been watching your videos and I must say I really do enjoy them! Good job!

I drilled two holes on the side (the port is MUCH bigger than you'd think), filed until the hole was big enough, then filed down the usb adapter so it would fit).

About the waterproofing... I used some sugru (google it, its a play-doh thingy that turns into hard silicon waterproof rubber after drying), to waterproof it.
Went through a "in all the news" storm with it, no water went through. and I can put and remove the mic adapter at will.
Its in a vid posted in here - search for "thong". (really!)

I enlarged the hole where I plug in the usb adapter. I added some appropriate rubber to fill the hole with some epoxy glue to keep it in place. I then cut a hole in the rubber (a fraction smaller than the usb plug) so it forms a tight seal. Done!

No mucking around when blutac each time (but that would be a quick and cheap alternative).

Probably beating a dead horse here, but I drilled a hole through my case on the GoPro and then filed it to size. I have a very tight fit because of it. I'm honestly not worried about rain getting in there. But I also live in a desert so rain isn't an issue. We average 10 inches of rainfall a year where I live. So.. pretty much nothing. Especially when you consider when it rains it drops like 3 inches at a time.

I changed to a genuine GoPro usb adapter and hence different shape to my eBay adapter, so had to re-waterproof the hole. I pulled out the old rubber and moulded in some silicon - working so far :)

There's 3 ways to do this.
1) Drill the hole like people suggest. It's no longer waterproof which is fine as long as you don't go swimming :D

2) Buy the new 3+ skeleton case. It has loads of holes pre-cut, but it make it less water resistant than just the one hole

3) Record your audio separately and put it together in editing. It means you can keep the case whole and you also don't have to trail wires from the cam into your helmet. Some people prefer it that way (e.g. AppleVonCrumble). I have this as an option if I forget my adapter lead, but I prefer the GoPro audio, so keep it as a backup.

Bought a skeleton housing

If you are not riding for a long time in rain i think that just drilling a little hole just for the mic will be enough (might cover with tape or use any of the other suggestions people made)

I sometimes use a voice recorder

for comparison both same mic in the same helmet

(voice recorder)
(go pro skeleton housing)

If you really wanna drill.
maybe this will help

I used a dremel for mine, traced the shape of the USB cable on the case, poked a hole then slowly enlarged it test fitting the cable, works great. It's definitely seen plenty of snow roost on the trails.

Stuff a small towel or something in the case as you're cutting or the plastic debris will then get all inside the casing if you don't. Ask me how I know

I've always wondered how to install the audio while using the waterproof case. But I don't want to put a hole since I might take it underwater for some other video takes (and I don't have enough budget to buy more waterproof case for now. Haha). I might as well try the separated recording for my first motovlogging trial.

Even if I have to put a hole through it, well probably gonna try using Blu-Tack or Blu-Tack-like in here.
