Hi Guys,

(forgive me if there's already a topic like this out there)

I record my footage on a GoPro2 and render most of it to mp4 30fps 720p. I always notice a little loss in quality when i go and upload the rendered file to YouTube. It takes YT longer to process too. Is there any ideal configuration? Or should i be using avi, or wmv outputs?

Current setup:
mp4 29.970 fps ntsc
AVC 1280 x 720 p
10 mbps
field: none (progressive scan)
encode mode: automatic

audio is fine, video rendering best blabla...

7 minute video is about 500 mb and quality is good, but when uploaded to youtube, it drops a bit (i compared the 2 side by side)

Youtube compresses it several times, in order to save space/bandwidth. It degrades the quality of all videos considerably, that's why I recommend compressing your video before so you don't waste time uploading a large file.

Here try this http://handbrake.fr it doesn't degrade quality but you'll only be uploading files less then 50mb so almost instant uploading.

Didn't work for me?
I exported a video from Adobe Premiere to .MP4 - H.264 Youtube preset @ 720p/29.9fps and the file is about 215Mb @ 5m30s

I then ran it through Handbrake with "optimise for web" selected and it created a .MP4 file 275Mb in size :?

I do my best to make sure the exported video stats match the original video stats as far as bitrates are concerned. Generally I'll render down from 1080 to 720 for the sake of saving space on my HD. I don't see much difference on YT between 1080 and 720, so I don't see the point in rendering to 1080. I've also used wmv containers for years and it seems to work pretty well. Of course I don't pay any attention to YT's processing time, it will take however long it takes and anything over 3-4hrs gets re-uploaded.

Trying to minimize the amount of time it takes YT to do something is moot now. Upload it as a scheduled upload set to go public at a specific time the following day. Then it makes no difference at all how long it takes them to process the video, it will be live when it is set to be live.

Seems adobe premier does a better job with encoded then handbrake. However I'm not sure on the quality difference (shouldn't be much). Whenever I use handbrake I lose a good 300/500mb of data on standard GoPro files less then 1GB.
