Fix Long Vlogs??

How do you guys go about editting or shortening your vlog? I like the whole random conversation style vlog which can end up being kinda long when you are riding around for an hour or so.

Is it best to just cut into multiple parts or episodes or should you just delete it down until you are at around 8min or so and just start over fresh next time?

I think as long as it's flowing and will keep interest, then it doesn't matter within reason how long it is.

Depending on my mood and how much time I have, I will cherry pick what to watch based either on how long it is, or if I know that it will keep my interest. A few of the people I sub to have really good topics, but they ramble a little bit and have 10 minute vlogs. I do watch them, but they tend to get saved for later. However, if I'm working away with limited internet and there's been a lot of vlogging going on, then they are likely not to get watched as there's only so much catching up I can do.

99% of my rides do not make on to youtube, I film about 12hrs a week, yea my math sucks but ya get the idea.
What I tend to do is just cut out the bits I think my be interesting and publish that. If I find a video is going over 6mins or so I then tend to split it at a natural point.

Now splitting, remember this isn't Hollywood do not worry too much about continuity so some early part of the ride may appear in part 2 for example just because it fits the topic of part better than one. And part two can in itself be called/renamed to an entirely different video.

But we all have our styles, thats just the way I do it :)

This is how I'm thinking about going about it. I think if I just start posting twice a week I should be able to keep length down between the two uploads. I don't always focus on topics so sometimes cutting it down is hard to do. 10min ish seems like the sweet spot to me.

Yep, that's the thing right there is time ;) . I'd like to be able to watch as many motovlogs as I can with my limited time... if one is 15 minutes, and the next 12, well, you get the idea ;) .....

cut the fluff, find your theme and delete what takes away from it. you can also just chop them up and make one video 4 or 5 videos. i usually aim for 10 minutes and subtract what isn't necessary until i hit that mark or less. i do want to improve myself and stay on topic better while vlogging, but that's a personal goal.

Yeah I'm working on that haha I actually made a vlog under 7min finally woot woot... My problem is staying on topic too but that probably because I think impromptu conversations tend to be more interesting.

"Holy cow, what is that in the road??! I need to... ooh, shiny things :D !"

i remember i one time i was trying really hard to tell the story of my bike's adoption. i restarted 3 separate times and wound up trailing off terribly. i just gave up and didn't talk for a while.

As others have said, it's good to edit it down. If it's a vlog you really want to release then cut out as much where you repeat yourself, pause, say "er" or "um", don't talk at all, etc. If it's really long try cutting out bits that are maybe obvious or similar to another part of what you said, and see if it still flows and gets the message across as you intend.
I watch a lot of vids of channels I sub to and also stuff that pops up but - time being hard to find - I will rarely watch a vlog that is more than 10 minutes as I just don't have the time.
Similarly, for me, a schedule is a no-no. You can't always keep to it and there's a risk of putting stuff out for the sake of it. Some of my favourite channels post a lot less often than most and it's a real thrill and a guaranteed watch when they appear in the feed ;)

I was wondering about that, so far I have refrained from mixing and matching between different rides, but as you say if it fits the topic it doesn't matter about continuity..... Think I am probably just being a bit lazy and not putting in the editing time and thinking a bit more about structuring the video.....will try harder..;)

I haven't started motovlogging yet (it takes forever to get endorsed in Florida, just moved here) but I have been vlogging for some time and a little trick I have picked up is listen for hesitation words (Um, Anyways, So, etc.) and cut them out and any silence on either side of them. Makes vlogs WAY more interesting.
