guys, I keep getting this pop up after importing and trying to preview a clip. What import settings should I have and what other settings did I mess up cause it worked last night.

a lot of searching and I came up with: click the don't show again box and adjust the drop down menu in the upper right corner to better performance (not better quality)... good to go now!

That also only affects the playback from the preview, when you export you won't have any droppes frames.

I'm on a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13"....upgraded the ram to 8gb, that helped quite a bit too. Still new to this whole editing thing.

I've got a late 2013 13" retina, the entry level one. Quite often the preview drops frames but the output is fine, despite sounding like a jet is going to take off when rendering multi cam multi clip vids :)

It was quite unnerving to suffer through the preview on my first one... I had a few other programs running and thought final cut was crap...nope, just my set up. Still a bit at a loss as to all the right steps for workflow...camera import to YouTube export. I am saving the raw files into their own folder, then importing them into fcpx, taking the clip and cutting out all the crap (like when I'm tongue tied or the alien abduction scene...it wasn't pretty). Then what the heck do I do with all the parts and pieces after the edit? Should I save the raw files? How do I save the cops for later outtake videos on alien abduction and Bigfoot sightings?

You got 10.1.x?

You can dump clips in to a project and leave that unfinalised for another day. It saves where you're at as long as you leave the files in the same place. The library remembers which raw clips and bits you need and you can literally pick up where you left off.

Don't use optimised media, and don't import the raw to the project/library as it will bloat the project file massively.
