Drones

Anyone owns an automatic follow-me drone?

Thinking of using one for shooting various videos.

I'm trying to find out the cheapest option. Most are over 1.3k USD. What are the general battery lives of one?

I fly a DJI phantom, there are a lot of rules, regs and laws you need to look at. I have a shoot planned this summer to include me on the bike with friends but its taking a hell of a lot of planning.

Even though the drone is set to follow its needs a pilot to keep any eye on it in case things take a turn?

You need to think where you are going to film with it as they are not allowed to fly over main roads or build up areas in England. So you need to find a road with a field next to it and then you need permission to take off from said field.

I have been scouting for a place to do my shoot for about 6 months and I think I have found it but the drone will still need to be up at about 60m high so it doesn’t hit any tree or phone lines. As well as that the road need to be a slow one most camera drones top out at about 25-40Mph depending on the wind

If you do it befor me i would love to see the video

Good luck mate!

I'm looking into the Phantom 2, seems cheap enough. Although I have to wonder if this thing actually has an auto-follow mode. The website only says it has an auto-home and land, not an auto follow and shoot a video.

the 2 does not have follow as far as i know the 3 defo does. the 2 also does not come with a camera or a gimble.

The rules are likely to be very different where he lives.

Oh cool, okay...i think since it's on sale..I might be able to get one cheap now :)

But might wanna look at other follow me drones in the meantime. Anyone got any other suggestions?

As much as follow drones are sick, I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than a promo video on a closed / super quiet road. If you're doing it on a main road the following laws would be broken instantly:

1. No due care and supervision whilst in control of an autonomous drone ('control aside', you know what I mean).

2. Flying a drone over a public highway.

That's as much as I can think of at the minute haha. It'd be sick to see, but unfortunately you will get shafted by law enforcement.
