DRIFT HD'S LATEST FIRMWARE TOTALLY DISABLES THE EXTERNAL MIC

So I finally got my new replacement Drift HD. Oddly they only replaced one even though both were experiencing the same trouble. One of the problems I was having, I was told by Drift Innovation support, would be fixed by the latest update so as soon as the new camera arrived I updated it. I went outside and tested the new firmware to see if it fixed the exposure problems. I made it better but still not good. I decided that it was better than before so I went ahead and updated both cameras.

The weekend came along and I went out to record some dual sport riding. It was one of the best days I've had on two wheels. I was very excited to get home and edit the video. I got home and quickly scrubbed through the videos and still noticed exposure problems but it was better than its ever been and was acceptable so I was ok with it. The next day I went to edit the video and realized I couldn't here myself speaking unless I was sitting still with the engine off.

I thought they finally listened and changed the audio settings for the external mic since all but the lowest setting was unusable. I was a bit pissed that there was no mention of this in on the downloads page for the firmware update. I just found out why.

This morning I did a test at my desk. I could barely hear myself on level one. Level 3 and 4 were a little better so I did a test of level 3 and 4 on the way to work. I got here and had nothing but wind noise unless I was sitting still and realized what had happened. The external mic wasn't working at all. It was picking up my voice from the built in mic but while moving it couldn't hear me over the wind noise.

This isn't a cable problem. Its not a camera hardware problem. This is happening with both of my camera and both of my microphones. The only logical explanation is that the firmware update totally disabled the microphone and I can find no way to turn it back on.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Why can't these guys get it right?! They have the potential to have the best camera for what we do but they're totally incompetent. The form factor is much better than the GoPro or any other camera on the market right now but every time they fix one thing they drastically screw up something else. How are these guys still in business?!

I have to say these guys are quick to respond and admit they have problems but its still frustrating as hell working with these cameras. They were aware of the problem and they have a fix. They said they attached it in the email response they sent but I don't see it so I replied and I'm waiting on the attachment.

If anyone else is experiencing this send them an email and ask for the update if they still haven't added it to their web site.

Re: DRIFT HD'S LATEST FIRMWARE TOTALLY DISABLES THE EXTERNAL

Hi all,

I have the exact same issue.
I used an external source and a 2.5mm adapter to record the sound in Drift HD and everything was fine.
After upgrading to 1.1.42 (29/05/2012) noticed that the sound was from the internal mic of the camera.
I suspected some cable issue/failure so I replaced them twice but without success.
I figured out that when you insert the jack, the camera doesnt disable the incamera mic and use the external one.

Thats the only post I have found so far about this issue.
I hope that a new firmware will be soon released addressing this issue.
Also, does anyone knows a repository/archive of previous firmwares in drift's site?

To be more precise my camera is useless to me now (I need the extrnal sound).
I would prefer to downgrade to a previous firmware that external mic works missing some extra benefits...

Hope for a fix in very very soon !!!

Email Drift Innovation support and they'll send you a firmware update that will fix it. For some reason they haven't added it to their web site yet so you have to email them.

This is why it's always best to wait until you start seeing reviews of a patch before getting it. Hope you get back online soon.

Hard lines there guys, but thank you for the heads up.

I will not be updating now, obviously!

So are they just emailing you the old patch to restore you to the point where the mic works, or is there a new patch with the fixes from the last update AND a working external mic?

The one they sent me was 1.1.43 so it should have all the "improvements" of 1.1.42 which is currently on their site. I really don't understand why they haven't put 1.1.43 on their site since having no external mic input is pretty significant. At the very least you would think they would pull 1.1.42.

So to answer you question, just email them and they should send you the fix.

Re: DRIFT HD'S LATEST FIRMWARE TOTALLY DISABLES THE EXTERNAL

Just now finding this out after coming back from recording a couple really good vlogs (finally). Of course it had to be AFTER I'd already updated the firmware to 1.1.42. I was so ready to upload some great videos too, now that I have my Sony Vegas render issue worked out. If it's not one thing, it's something else entirely.

/facepalm

EDIT: Contacted Drift via email. It's Saturday, so I doubt I'll hear back from them today. Goodness...

Re: DRIFT HD'S LATEST FIRMWARE TOTALLY DISABLES THE EXTERNAL

They sent me 1.1.38 when I asked them about a fix for 1.1.42. So if you want to risk .43, you're going to have to ask for it specifically.

"Thanks for contacting us, and apologies for the problem with the firmware.

Please install version 1.1.38 (attached), for the time being, and we have a subsequent update due for release shortly.

Please feel free to email if you have any more questions."

This was on June 26th. I think I might have a different definition of "shortly".

Re: DRIFT HD'S LATEST FIRMWARE TOTALLY DISABLES THE EXTERNAL

Firmware version 1.1.53 is now downloadable from http://driftinnovation.com/support/firmware-update/. They claim it enables the external microphone, automatic exposure compensation is smoother and faster, fixes playback issues with MACs, and fixes problem with camera freezing on 720p/50fps. Hope this helps you guys with the DriftHD. I'm still using the Drift Stealth HD170 with no problems.

Re: DRIFT HD'S LATEST FIRMWARE TOTALLY DISABLES THE EXTERNAL

I did have this issue. Drift support were great, I rang them and they e-mailed me a beta version of 1.1.53 within 15 mins :P that fixed it.
