Drift HD issue

Check out my latest vid on my site http://www.whitegixer.com on the Drift HD 1080 Test Vlog on Gixer - you'll see (or rather hear) the issue.

My external mic is set in the right hand cheek pad of my lid but is crap. My can ain't stupid loud and the mic sensitivity is set at the level with 1 green line. I'm using the latest Drift HD 1080 set on 1080, 25fps, 60Hz in SUN level setting and has the latest firmware update.

If I can't resolve this, my VLOGS are gonna have to have the audio put on after I've done em, which aint ideal.

Also, some of the footage is reading 'this file is not a movie file' when I try to open them on my laptop, even after I have copied them to my HD. Obviously I can't be taking my lid off everytime I stop/start the cam but there seems to be a recording issue with the cam - whether this is a technical/cam issue that can/can't be sorted and needs sending back... I have it on load from DRIFT though with the intention of reviewing it so I don't really want to have to send it back if I don't need to.

I did have some issues previously that were sorted out with a firmware update but seen as how I have the latest one on, it can't be anything to do with that.

Any help you guys can offer will be gratefully appreciated.

I am a it gutted as some of the vid I did was good and it hasn't captured.

Welcome to Drift Audio. It never works out well on the first go and most people have to spend several hours and many different tests to get good audio out of them. That is -by FAR- the biggest shortfall of the camera.

As for the non-saving of a file...I can't help you there. I haven't heard very many complaints about the camera doing that either. All I can really say is that the remote isn't terribly accurate for use with a helmet camera. You may have better results if you just reach up and push the button on the camera directly. Unless that's what you're already doing..in which case..I dunno. Could be the camera, could be the card, hell it could be your computer hallucinating.

Audio: Trial and error, trial and error, trial and error....oh and some more error after trials. It's a pain with the Drift, I must admit. You'll find something that works. I had to put tape over my mic and increase the volume in post.

That card problem sounds weird. Make sure all the drivers and crap are up to date on your computer. Or maybe your card is weird.

If you're shooting in 1080 you need to have a class 10 card. If its not a class 10 card you risk getting corrupted files.

All previous comments are good and valid and it does take time to try different settings. My only thought is that most laptops don't have the grunt to handle 1080 @ 60fps HD video. If the troublesome video can tried on a more powerful PC it may be a better result.

Thanks for the replies guys. As I said in my first ever post, a lot of this video stuff I'm learning on the fly. I'm not sure what a class 10 card is. I did buy it off ebay for £8 from Taiwan or Hong Kong (can't recall exactly where). Didn't think it would make a lot of diff seen as it's a Kingston anyway. I've always bought Kingston RAM and know it's reliability. Compared to UK prices for the same product of £40- £50, considered it a bargain for a 16Gb card.

*How do I put an image up on here of the card?*

The card is a Micro SD HC 16GB C16G TAIWAN Kingston SDC4/16GB 27 FC T (as it is written on the card. If I can get an image up I will show you guys it.

I'll try the audio thing as well but as for the laptop not handling it, I don't think that was the issue. When I tried to view back the files on the DRIFT itself it said file error so know the problem was lying there. It wasn't until I connected it to the Mac that I saw there were actually files on there but they were the ones that wouldn't open despite being realistically size correct. By that I mean that each recorded file (even though it wouldn't open) was size correct for what I had recorded. A few 3ooMb files and a couple of 1.8Gb files.

Failing this for the card, where do you guys recommend I buy cards or storage devices from?

Sounds like you have a class 4 card? It should be a number on its own in a circle on the card. That would cause problems with corrupt files as it can't write the data fast enough.

A class 10 card will look something like this. Even on different brands it will say class with the number in a circle. If there's no class specified its usually a class 2 or class 4 but even those usually specify. Class 10 cards are usually a bit pricier but they're much more reliable and they're necessary for 1080p video. Try shooting in 720 at 30fps and your card may work.

Where do you guys recommend to buy from and what price?

Cheers for the help guys, it's all starting to fall into place. Slowly but I'm getting there

Class 10 cards aren't that expensive, I got a 16gb one for around £16 and that was an over the counter jobby so it will probably be cheaper if you buy online.

Wow, that's a pretty awesome price. The cheapest 16gb class 10 I could find last year was around $65. I ended up grabbing a 32gb for $90. I figured the highest speed, highest capacity card I could find would probably last a while. Kinda hurt to pay almost $100 for something smaller than my thumbnail though. :/

Holy crap...I'd say you're paying way too much. I've never paid more than $32 for my 32gb class 10. http://slickdeals.net/newsearch.php#forumchoice[]=9&q=32gb+SDHC&firstonly=1

I know you said last year, but I got mine for the same price last year. Just a little more effort in the search was required.

I spent quite a bit of time searching. I bought one of the cheaper 16gb class 10s that turned out to not actually be a class 10. So when I went to buy the big one I bought one of the ones in the middle of the pack. There were quite a few that cost well over $100. I was at the point where it was worth it to spend a bit more and -know- I was getting what I wanted/needed vs spending a little less and getting yet another card that couldn't cut it.
