Drift Ghost 4k

Glad I'm not the only on to wonder about the red flare problem. I like Drift Cameras, but have to wonder about their PR efforts and customer service. They've already let their own forum get hacked by porn. I know they aren't affiliated with the site (officially) but it sends a bad image overall for the company.

I'd also like the 4K to be able to run 4K at 30fps, and not a just 25.

messing up cameras seems to be the order of the day for action cam manufacturers, GoPro with their Hero 5 Session and Black have also launched a lemon (for motovloggers) and seem intent on making it even worse by disabling audio on the one-touch record for folk who use an external mic now too!

Bought Ghost 4K a month ago, used it as lid-cam for a few weeks, bought two more (one for car and one for rear of bike).

Have not seen any sign of red flare.

Drift website has latest firmware as 1507 but when I connected my cams to the Drift Life app earlier this evening, I was prompted to update to v1513. Done.

There is a 1080 120fps mode. 4K max fps is 25, but 4KUHD has 30fps, and 2.7K has 60fps.

A few weeks ago I reported Car DVR mode did not work on battery power. Drift support acknowledged my message and said that this was by design. Latest firmware now includes ability to run Car DVR on battery. You're welcome :)

I've also reported that there is no way to connect one remote control to multiple Ghost 4K cameras. Hopefully they'll address that one soon too.

Video quality is excellent. Audio is excellent; I use the external mic connection wired through to a mic inside lid.

Live streaming (from the bike over mobile data) worked the first time I tried it, and the live view on phone/tablet via Bluetooth was very handy when I was positioning and sticking the new lid connector (had to move it because my previous Ghost-S connector position caused the footage from the 4K to point too far left).

If anybody has a question I'll be happy to give it my best shot.

Cheers!
Matt

Is there any way to edit a post? I see two typos in my message above :(

Great first post. Thanks for the info. Whats the battery life like, have you had time to measure this?

The streaming must have been insanely data hungry?

You can only edit a post for like 15(I think) minutes after you've posted it.

Whats the battery life like, have you had time to measure this?

These are the results that I gathered earlier using the built-in 1500mAh battery plus the 500mAh battery module:

  • 1080 (HD) 60fps - 2h 05m 31s
  • 1080 (HD) 30fps - 2h 47m 34s
  • 1520 (2.7K) 30fps - 2h 52m 59s
I've chosen these three configurations because they allow image stabilisation which was enabled all of the time.

Even though 1080 at 60fps results in the shortest battery life of these tests, this is what I'm using day to day because it provides the sharpest and smoothest image. I was disappointed with 2.7K, not only is the image not as sharp, but the stabilisation does not seem to work as well, and the resolution is not pixel-compatible with anything youtube offers.

My chosen configuration of 1080 at 60fps used about 65% of a 64GB memory card in the 2h 05m.

Hope this helps!

Fixed that post!

Now to debate if the 4K is a worthwhile upgrade for quality at 1080!

That's fairly easy to answer. Look at your analytics and see if people are watching your stuff on 4K able devices.

If most of your content is viewed on mobile then it's not worth it.

I don't think I have the patience for my laptop do churn through 4K, was more if the 1080 was better. Matt showed me some raw 1080 footage, it looks good, but not sure I want to go spend a fair bit for what isn't a huge jump in quality.

I sold my Drift Ghost-S for £220. I always feel Drift is a little late to the scene. I mean gopro will eventually be a step ahead always in my opinion. But don't let that fool you, Drift still make good action cams. In terms of the 4k, better late than never i guess.

Never been interested in the highest resolutions with anything tbh 4k isnt even a commonly used resolution yet, and if you have a lesser quality pc for editing it will be a right ballache

Maybe we could show the 1080 60fps clip here that I showed to @Lurch so that people can make up their own minds re quality compared to Ghost-S and others?
Yeh i think higher frame rates in 1080p is far better than 4k, i mean for the most part people dont really watch youtube videos on there 4k big screen tvs and not many people even own a 4k pc monitor

I would go 60fps over 4k. Reason being is that on bikes you'll get smoother playback at 30fps from youtube, plus with 60fps you can also slow something down without it looking staggered.
