Does Your Significant Other Ride?

Back at it
So I've been bugging my girl friend to learn to ride for quite sometime. The other day she totally blind sided me by telling me she signed up for the MSF course, I honestly think I was happier then her. I wanna surprise her with a bike, and my question is what kind, type, etc. I was leaning towards a 250 or a 300, but had also debated sport touring bikes in the 500- 650 range as well. Granted she is a new rider and a 600 seems a little heavy and powerful for right now, so I am leaning towards the 250's or 300.

250 300 size is always good for a learner and as a longer term investment. As its not too big to learn on and powerful enough to be fun once a confident rider.

Personally, a lot of women I know (i.e, mom, aunts, my fiancee, and friends) tend to like big sport bikes (if they are younger) or Harleys (if they're my mom or aunts).

But when I asked them what they could see themselves riding, it's usually either a Grom, a Vespa or a Maxi Scooter like the TMax.

She's really into the sports bikes, but that's not surprise being that I have an R6. She also liked my old FZ6. I was also debating the Grom but don't know much about it.

my wife is very interested in riding with me seldom but not on her own. now that we have kids id hate for both of us to get hit when shes tail riding and we both get screwed up and leave our kids high and dry. big reason i think she left the idea of ever riding herself.

Mine wants to learn but with kids around and such there hasn't been much time. I'm looking at the 300 and 500 sport bikes with a current preference for the CBR500R.

I think every parent has the same thought.

My uncle and my Dad used to ride a lot during their youth. When they got married and had kids, they stopped entirely. Although ever since I got my motorcycle license, my Dad has also bought an old cruiser and gotten back into riding just only during the weekends.

Mine wants do a CBT only and ride a 125 so she can come out with me. If she got full license id start her on a ninja 300, little bit more power, not as such a big leap from a 125 and pretty much the same size bike as a 125 these days.

Mine has no intention of riding herself, but pillioning is in the works when I get a more passenger-friendly bike

Mine doesn't!

I'd find out exactly what bike your lady wants before buying "a bike", if she's set on sports and you rock up with a Grom, she's going to want to swap it asap

I screwed that up by taking her for a ride when I first got my first bike. The extra helmet I had for her was too big and I shifted like crap, slamming the kana-tuna into every gear, every time. The result was her helmet slamming into mine at every shift, and this her head slamming into the front of her helmet. I think I still have the claw marks in my sides from when we hit triple digits (man, was I dumb way back then!)

A few years later we lost everything in a motorcycle business I had built and her distane for motorcycles just grew more and more. When I started riding again a couple years ago...she could barely bring up the topics of motorcycle without getting majorly upset... But she does now, and that's a step forward. My love for her is now more than for bikes and she knows it, before...we both knew I loved bikes more. Take that as a lesson you young whipper snappers ;)

The real question is.. Will you let her ride YOUR bike, BigGreek? :)

I'd say it would be easier to let her ride yours for a bit, get familiar with the weight, power, handling, position, and if she still has a hard-on for the sportbike, then you can think about getting a 600.

Sometimes they might "like" something but when it's hands-on time, they might not really like it anymore, like too aggressive, body ache, etc. Who knows after enough seat time on the sportbike she might think differently and want a naked bike or something else instead.

Some are gonna flame me for saying to get the >600 bike for a beginner but it's ultimately her choice and if she is happy on a 250/300 then that's fine too.

Mine doesn't ride, even as a passenger. She used to ride pillion for short trips on my old cruiser, but when we got onto the highway, she got too scared. To be fair, the highways in Texas are like the chariot race from the movie Ben Hur.

She doesn't mess with me when it comes to my bike because she's always known I was a rider and that bikes are just a part of who I am.

One thing I would advise is not to try to corral your spouse/girlfriend/etc into what kind of ride you think is the right one. Let him/her get out there, take the courses, go to shops and just shut up unless they ask for your advice. Maybe jump in if the sales person tries to give them obviously shitty advice, but otherwise let them do what's comfortable for them. They might change their mind at some point and want to move to a different bike, but we've all done that and it's just part of being a beginner.

When I started I was all about Harleys, but I gradually changed and started riding other bikes. I still like Harleys but right now they just aren't a fit for me as a rider.

I'd personally say that 600+ is also okay. No matter bike you get on, if you're mature enough, the process of getting used to the bike is more or less the same no matter the class.

Let her visit a store and ride around on a few bikes. I leaned heavily towards supersports but now naked have really got my attention.

Keep us posted! I've been trying to get my SO to ride for a while...in vain.
