Does anyone here Motovlog on YouTube for a living?

"First" goal for me at this moment is going to a 32h workweek with the financial help from YT.
Maybe one day ;)

Keep after it, it's possible! Don't rely on just YT for extra income though, seek out other revenue streams too like stock investments or even real estate.

real estate is way above budget xD
But yeah, some small other incomes won't hurt.
But you need to have the time to invest in those xD

It almost sounds like most if not all of you are measuring youtube revenue purely in terms of ad payout. I can almost guarantee no full time youtubers are running on just ad revenue.

Affilate marketing, developing your own product, merch, etc, are all things to supplement the ads and in fact typically the ads become your lowest form of income. I'm not anywhere near this point but I have been in Internet marketing for over a decade at this point to some extent and have had mild success with websites, ads just aren't the meat and potatoes of income in most cases.

According to her latest video, Jess at Her Two Wheels finally quit her job and is now a full time YouTuber.

I think I'd enjoy riding my Goldwing and making YT vids full time for a living! Wish I could afford to devote myself to this hobby that much.

I stopped watching her a long time ago...I bet she's backpedaling on the ruroc thing. She should. As far as FT YT, I have a FT job...Be working a long time and this is just fun if you will and after watching The Social Dilemma and some speakers on Ted, IDK. It's a little wacky, but I am at the other end of career/working.

I saw that video come up on my home page but didn't watch it. If you treat it like a job, then it can be your job. But it takes some consistency and discipline that I've yet to master in order to get to that point and I dno't have that luxurty of being able to quit a steady job and jump in head first.

I think what some don't realize about those that fall into a small percentage that are successful at things, like SM, sports, business, is that they have certain personality traits/psychology that most of us don't have and that's probably a good thing. You can look at people like Oprah, Ellen, Rachel, Andy Cohen etc seem like so successful and what they've achieved is desirable, but they are a mess behind the scenes, the latest case with Ellen and we've heard about the others. If you don't connect the factors that made them successful with them and understand they are outliers, either it looks like magic or some think if they do the same things they can be just like them. Trust me, you don't want to be like Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs when he was alive or Elon Musk and if you do, you better be obsessed to the extent that you'll sacrifice almost anything to do what it takes. Usually these folks have lower empathy in spite of their charisma in some cases and have a high tolerance for risk, as well as low boundaries for some behaviors. They tend to compartmentalize well. They can be spotted fairly easily, but many fall for the spiel and narratives and sing along with mitch. This applies to most things being sold in a sense, whether SM, politics and religion.

Ya totally - but there is a happy medium as well where you can be reasonably successful, at least enough so to make a full time career from internet marketing/youtube/etc. But it still requires you to either have natural drive and ambition, or you have to learn discipline. These things can be learned but it's not something that just comes easy unless you are extremely lucky and just hit a gold mine.

I seriously hyper-fixate on stuff but the problem is it's not sustainable for me. It goes for a bit then I'm onto the next shiny object, lol

I would NOT want to be a Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk, etc etc. No thanks

And things change throughout life too or can. Lots of folks are driven by worthiness issues and it's never good enough. Then you get to a certain age and at least for me, you realize what the game is. My question with a lot of things is, Cui Bono? Who Benefits? Why? Always ask why and who benefits. If someone is 30, it's a different perspective than 60 with regard to work and such. I think in general most of us waste too much time with identity with regards to work. Like most things, Pareto applies. If you're not in the small percentage group, don't worry about it, but an awful lot of people don't understand their own motivations and who they are/why they do what they do. That might seem hard to believe, but considering how people are manipulated by SM/Politics/religion, it makes sense. If people did, it would be very hard to get them to do what's not in their best interests ergo in someone else's interests.

So if I read up on this thread right, a little bit of crazy, a little bit of luck, and willing to bend to the will of the masses, as well as treat YT as a full-time job, and you can be successful?

Then explain my paltry subscriber count ;)

I think we forgot one thing: talent. Which cannot be taught. Or at least, nobody taught me.

I'm not sure if it's talent but rather skill.

For example, learning how to really work the SEO system on YouTube, learning how to create eye catching thumbnails, being willing to use clickbait just enough to grab viewers without pissing them off in the process, learning how to use B-roll well and edit together videos which are interesting to watch, etc.

I see a lot of "successful" motovloggers doing these things not because they have a natural talent for it or are film makers at heart, but rather because they've learned well from researching and studying and are willing to act a certain way to maximize potential.

Speaking for myself, I don't want to make clickbaity thumbnails or use deceptive titles to grab viewers, that's not something I'm interested in doing despite knowing it might work statistically. I'd rather be proud of my channel than make a few more dollars from it, but hey that's just me!

I would agree, yes. Clickbate pisses me off. It's the one thing Scotty does that I just skip over most now. Others use clickbate too or low hanging fruit(no pun intended) to attract a certain demo. I would add another factor: Getting a hand up from motovloggers that are doing better. I've seen some of that. Some don't return the favor, one wants it to be all them. I call that person the steepler...Anyway, look at musicians. Some will have an incredible first album, one they sweated over and it's what is called a desert island album. Not a bad track on them, but then successive albums aren't as good as they are under contract to produce. Sometimes they lose authenticity, originality and/or quality. On the other hand, something get better with age, like STNG. I thought the first season was so so, but it got better after that, but acting is different than bands. Bands form and play together for a while before producing an album, usually, while acting is usually thrown together as a project and it takes time to gel at times unless you have very good artists. You can see that in music with pure studio created music. Just get the pros in and they knock it out. Playing live though is another ball of wax...Anyway, skill comes from repetition, time in. If you haven't, Gladwell's book Outliers is an interesting take on this subject. The one thing not mentioned is timing. Being born at the right time and getting into it at the right time. With YT, it's generally the 25-35 year old range that seems to cleave well to it, although Scotty is an outlier, but he was on TV before YT.

IDK if I would use the word crazy. Neurotic as hell, yes, some have personality traits that probably go beyond that, but I like neurotic.

FWIW, I think you have a great personality. I think we'd get along great if we worked together. You're a rip. For me, I am older than you guys for the most part. I've been working in some fashion for 42 years and I am tired. I don't suffer BS and authority well anymore and I see a lot of stuff we put value into as meaningless. Maybe it's from having a lot fewer days left than behind me, but I think we waste a lot of time trying to please others, but that can make you a lot of money and fame. Worthiness issues can drive people to heights. My wife is full of them, came from a family of 13 kids and it's never good enough. She also makes 3x what I do, but she's starting to have some realizations, which is good. As far as talent goes, I think I am a much better writer than vlogger, but writing is passé today. People want multimedia in short hits, not really develop ideas and dig deep. Right now I am just doing this as an outlet. Something to do to express. If I don't do well, so what. I have a job for at least another 2 years 11 months. What I will probably do is sit down and write a few books. Gotta get it out somehow.

Thanks for the kind words, I do appreciate it! :D

I know I'm neurotic... why else would I spend so many hours tweaking videos before publishing them? Fretting over individual frames and stuff.

Yes, it's one heck of an outlet, but I still find myself censoring myself [mostly word choices - not expletives, but could be offensive] It's an internal struggle because my native language is foul and abrasive at times.

Worthiness issues can cause one to reach great heights, or completely implode. I am more the latter. On a side note, I haven't recorded anything in WEEKS due to a lot of mental stress and issues, which are rooted in this.

If you want to write books, I say GO FOR IT! I love writing, and it's so much easier for me to write than speak. If traditional blogs were still popular, I'd probably be doing that, but you're right - people want short videos with bright colors and fast talking.

I can be as well. When I moved to Iowa, I had to dial it down a bit. AZ isn’t as pent up, but I have my moments where people must be thinking where did I come from. New York of course! I am with you on writing. John, it’s always a pleasure…we just to do a barn raising for you.

I've been granted honorary Masshole status from a Bostonian I went to college with, on account my driving. Others have given me a rank in the Navy for my swearing. Pulitzer called and said my writing was fantastic.

Only one of those is true. Pick the right one and you get a gold star for the day :D

My 12th grade spanish teacher said I had a 5'2 sicilian inside my 6'5 body. I had no idea what he was talking about as my dad was napolitano.
