Does Anyone Get Scared When Your Not Ridding?

Usually when I ride I'm not thinking about the dangers of motorcycling(weaving in and out of traffic, near misses from idiots)...but afterwards throughout my day, it dawns on me how dangerous it is and how it's probably a matter of time before an accident happens (I.E. idiot gets me). Do any of you have that sort of thought process? I have no idea why I think of these things when I'm not riding...but I do. Recently some rider near me got killed by a drunk driver, I hear of similar occurrence's pretty regularly. Just puts things into perspective, I'll keep ridding because I love it, but that thinking always lingers with me and reminds me not to be too complacent.

Granted I've only been ridding for about 3k miles so far, so wondering if that's just newbie stuff.

I don't ever think about the dangers of riding, when riding to be honest.

I'm well aware of the dangers so I ride aggressively but most crashes can actually be avoided

Agree with dandoolittle. I've been driving 22 years doing 30k a year so have built up the "6 sense" of spotting/avoiding accidents before they happen. Obviously u can't account for drunk drivers etc but most "should" be avoidable. I just do little things like ease off the throttle a tad and hover my hand/foot over the brakes if I think a car may pull out of a side turn etc. I don't slow down and cause traffic jams etc but hovering over the brake etc can give me that 2 second advantage of stopping sooner and avoiding an accident.

I think there have been times I have the after thought of "shouldn't have done that"

What I worry about more is me having a little brain fade moment and trying to do something I can do easily on the bike in the car.

Remember a moment once where I almost tried to lane filter why in the car. That would have ended really badly.

I've only been riding for about 5 years but I never think about those things in any depth. I ride on the defensive all the time which seems to come natural at this point. Always anticipating other's reactions.

I think you only notice the news reports of motorcycle accidents because you are now (recently) a rider. If you take a step back and look at the whole picture without that new mental focus point you'll realize that cars, planes, bicycles, etc. all are having frequent mishaps yet they aren't standing out to you as much.

Wear your gear, stay alert, never get "too" comfortable, and ride safe. Enjoy the ride.

Yeah your right, you all have good points ill take into consideration =P Guess I still have the new rider fear going on haha

When you are on the bike, every decision you make cannot be second guessed.
"Can I pass through that space between those two trailers?"
"That car is pulling out right in front me! Brake or roll on throttle?"
"Oh shit, loose gravel in the corner! Brake and run wide or keep the line?"

When you are not on the bike, you have time to think about it and analyze in-dept, and realize how badly you could have fucked up had you made a bad choice. That's why riding is dangerous, and quick decisions and reflexes keep you safe.

Some people cannot get over how dangerous it is and doubt they can ever feel safe/confident riding, and ultimately decide to quit riding.

Assume everyone is an idiot and take the appropriate action. But i dont think about being a sack of meat all the time

Like Swiss said earlier, it's best to remember what can happen always so you respect the bike and make sure you stay rubber side down. That fear is your ally...to an extent anyway.

It healthy to look back and wonder if it was safe.
