Curious, Anyone Recording Audio Separately?

With all the cheap cameras out there, the one downside I find on every one is the lack of mic in. This has led me to consider doing a side recording, and merge the audio at the editing level. Anyone do this with any sort of success? Just curious.

Thinking something like this:
Search amazon for "eBoTrade 8GB Professional Digital Voice Recorder" since I can't post links yet... /grin

Just curious if anyone else has considered doing it this way.

I have tried this on a sony voice recorder but just works as well on the ghost.

Dont do it as much with vloging (have a camera with decent audio and boom mic in the helmet) but I do it all the time with other videos. It is quite easy, just start recording on both, give a good slap so the camera gets the hands and the audio gets the clap (for a sync point) and then merge them later.

I am trying out a setup I learned from another motovlogger. I placed the mic under my collar. The audio was amazing!

I ride a Harley Electra glide and I could hear the lifters ticking along with the lovely rumble of the exhaust. I am still working on the gain settings.

A good audio recorder is definitely the superior method IMO. I remember Accidental Broacast attached a Zoom recorder to his helmet Its worth the production value if you have the subs to back it. That being said I still just use my USB mic

By USB mic, are you referring to the one that plugs into the GoPro?

I ran external audio over a long group ride this weekend. I have a fairing and the external audio was more clear, but it is time consuming when there is a lot of cutting of the footage.

I am thinking of going with the plug but wondered about water proofing the connection.

I've been running a modded case for external audio since day 1 no water issues, although never been submerged. Snow, ice, rain yes. I only cut the portion for the adapter to fit nice and snug.

I used to (and sometimes still do) do this with a Zoom H2N, but it is just such a massive faff all the time that it's not worth the effort.

That's kind of what I figured. With my GoPro and an external powered mic, I've got great sound, and even that though, at times has annoyed me -- Like riding for 20min before I realize I didn't turn on the switch, or I hit it by accident and turned it off...

Yep I use the Zoom H2n with a Steel series mic that came with the Siberia V1 headset. The headphone is dead but the mic is working perfectly. Audio quality is just phenomenal
