Converting Mic Tip?

So I've noticed that the GoPro does not take the 3 lip (sorry don't know the tech term) tip mic's but the 2 are ok. Is it possible to cut the end off and replace it (solder) with one with 2 lips instead of 3?

My understanding is that the 3rd lip is for audio control like on a phone, however the gopro doesn't support that and is likely why those mic's dont work.

A microphone will only need 2 wires if mono.

A regular PC uses a TS connector version of 3.5mm jack. There you have 2 contact surfaces with 1 black strip between them. This gives a single channel recording. Most recorders and action cameras use a TRS connector (2 black strips). This setup records the mic on both left and right channel. So you solder the mic positive wire to the first two prongs and the ground to the sleeve (this is the metal part connection just before the wire). The last type is TRRS (with 3 black strips). Like you said it is used in smartphones and the third pin is for music and audio control.

p.s.2 just solder the positive wire to the Tip and Ring, and the negative to ground. Should be golden. I'll be doing it tonight myself.

Well No issues at all. I cut my headset microphone and soldered a 3.5mm jack, so now i can try different microphones with my setup. First actual video #comingSoon.

Hi for my motovlogging I chose gopro hero 2 just for this reason! (It doesn't need an adaptor)

I used to run a Hero 2 on trackdays (before I realised motovlogging was a thing) was ok but the later ones I think are a higher quality video output
