..... But according to an email I just got sent from an Aussie action sports gear supplier.... Contour is BACK!!

New supplies of the 2+ are hitting shelves.... And in the coming months "there will be exciting new camera releases" etc etc....

Hmmm .. I'm a Drift fan! ... But always liked the Contour gear as well... Thoughts of another camera swim through my head!?

I'm pleased, Contour is (was?) a big name in sport cameras, not very known but a favourite by many.
It's no good to be left with just 2 choices in sport cameras so I'm happy drift and gopro now have a true competitor back.
I'm hoping to see new technology from Contour since every other manufacturer is selling exactly the same crap with a different case.

I heard it was coming back, bought out by a new company (maybe?) and re-released. Them coming back is great news for me, I bought a +2 in January and at that time getting it going was a serious pain in the ass as there was little/no information, downloads, updates or software about. But in saying that I really like it, especially as a helmet cam, very slim profile if a little basic.

Yep very pleased! Really happy with my Contours and a Drift fan too. Contour reopened this April and have new models in the works. Still trying to establish if it was Clarke Capital or bought by the staff. See what happens. But more players mean better deals and advancement in the gear.

I'm s till using my contour's, I just like the way they look the best. So glad to hear their back. I hope they start to make more affordable models with mic inputs. I'm going to take my Contour Roam apart to wire in an external mic soon.

Surely there's more then just Drift and GoPro, Sony make cameras (well I suppose this is not the best example...), Garmin Virb new company with some awesome cameras that measure all sorts of things- speed, altitude, hart rate

I HATE to say that I like the latest camera from Sony, model whatever whatever 30. It still has the same problems as the first one (cannot use the camera with external mic) but the selection of accessories is the biggest I ever saw for a sport camera. The LCD remote kicks the gopro out of the map. And it's not more expensive than the latest gopro black.

Hero 3+ is brilliant, if gopro but the camera is a bullet then they would wipe out the competition I reckon. I doubt that would ever happen as they've marketed themselves with the same design, one day that will burn out

Gopro is the better quality camera on the market, that's a fact

However, drift is a motovlog camera. They have the market of pick it up and slap it on.

Gopro is set up, piss about, annoy your friends, then go, then stop the ride because the suction fell off

Compare any footage from drift, contour or Sony with a gopro and the GP leads. Change on light, shadows etc all are brilliant with the gopro but ok with other brands.

However, convenience is the drift or contour. I wouldn't buy a new contour aa they've just been pulled out of near bankruptcy

The latest drift has the same hardware as the gopro, the latest gopro uses the same image sensor as the sony, they're about the same camera with different package. Cannot say much about the sony though because I don't have one.
The Hero 2 is on par with the Drift HD, both have the same characteristics and good night/dark sensitivity. The hero 3 and Ghost plainly suck in low light.
Anyways I can't do a proper comparison because raw camera footage is not readily available, every comparison that is uploaded to YT is highly compressed. I don't even recognize my own footage after uploading to YT because the quality suffers so much.

Build quality? I don't know, I never saw any sony, contour or drift camera go flying down the street because a mount broke. I saw that many times with gopros.
The camera mount ecosystem of the gopros is stupid. Any other camera has a proprietary option and a standard mount and you can use the camera with or without the waterproof shell. Having a standard mount means that you can use the camera accessories you already own like tripods, suction cups, timelapse adapters, dollies, steadycams, etc. You cannot do that with a gopro while you surely can with drift, liq and most others.

I read not too long ago somebody posting a comparison of the gopro 3+ black and the Sony HDR-AS30 in a gopro forum. At first sight it looked like it was going to be a good discussion and then all the gopro fanboyism surfaced and they claimed advantages so ridiculous as gopro enabled biting the camera while surfing or that the live view remote was a stupid addition by sony and not needed for anything.

Picture-wise the cameras are the same. Some people like "protune" and all the gopro gimmick but you can do that with any camera in post with a few clicks.

I said last year that the action cameras aren't bringing anything new to the table. Well, Sony came with a truckload of stuff not found on other cameras and that makes the Sony a better option over the GP3+BE for the same price and even less.

Anybody choosing gopro over anything nowadays, fails to do the homework and is just following the majority. The same way with Sena.
