Contour 720 issues

Hey guys, I'm just getting into this whole thing and am setting up a contour 720, yeah I know not the best camera. Anyway, the video quality is appalling and I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing. I've seen lots of good video from other 720's and I'm thinking it has to be something I'm doing/not doing. I can upload something to YouTube so you can see it for yourselves but in the mean time... I'm recording on the "HD" setting using a 16GB lexar micro SD card and yes it was a sunny day but more than anything the resolution is what seems to be suffering. While I continue to troubleshoot this any advice would be appreciated! Thanks ahead of time.

Are you editing the footage in a program, or is this quality just a result from watching imported footage right from the camera?

I'm sorry to have to say this, but wrong choice of camera.

I had a Contour 720 as my first camera and it was shit. Had a GoPro 1 after that, and it was brilliant. Then bought a Contour + (1080p) and it is shit. So shit in fact that I don't even bother filming in 1080p with it anymore, I film 720. The GoPro ONE is better than the Contour + image quality wise.

The image quality on Contours is just crap. There's no other way to look at it unfortunately. You're not missing anything, it's just plainly a crap camera. I'm so sorry I don't mean to be rude, I've fallen for their marketing myself, TWICE. Never again, Contour, never again.

Now, they're practical cameras. Not too bulky, profile goes with the helmet, rotating lens and everything, sturdy as hell too. But they forgot one thing. For a camera to be good you actually have to be able to see some of the stuff you film. And that's where it FAILS.

(I'm not even going to mention the electronics on the Contour+, appalling stuff).

My only piece of advice (sorry again): steer well clear from any Contour product in the future.

Yeah that's what I'm discovering as well. I bought it cause it was literally dirt cheap on craigslist and though I might give it a shot. More than likely I'll be picking up something else. There are loads of used Gopro 2's out there for around 150 bucks.

My 720 was ok, a very reliable camera for the time I had it, but back then it was the best out there, remember most other footage you see these days is taken on cameras with higher resolutions and better sensors!

My Contour Roam is fantastic and everything I could ever want from a helmet camera, besides a mic jack.

Don't know about the 720 or the plus, but the Roam is awesome.

Never tried Contour, I was advised not to go near them, so i went with Drift for the HD720 then the HD1080

If you listened to all the advice going on cameras, you wouldn't be able to buy a Drift, a Contour OR a GoPro!

I also have the Roam. It does everything I want, without fault. And I love it. I considered getting a Drift720, but the amount of stories on here about faulty Drift cameras is crazy! I've never had purple lines, file corruption, or battery issues, all of which are common problems for the Drift.

As for the GoPro. It's too big, too heavy, and too difficult to turn on and off on the move.

Dont know about the 720, but I have a Contour ROAM, and it really ROCKS.

I recently upgraded to the CONTOUR +2 and it is even better.

My only doubt is choosing between 1080p/30 FPS or 720p/60FPS

This was recorded with the CONTOUR ROAM:

Are you using the free Easy Edit Software to adjust the settings? Inside that program you can set the Hi and Low video settings to HD or normal. It could be that these settings are switched or not adjusted correctly and you are not actually on the HD settings. I have one and usually use the 720p setting and its crisp and works great. Too bad my external mic mod went to shit and it's only good for video now and not audio. I'll probably just get a different camera.

Good news... found a brand new Drift HD that somone got for christmas and apparently didn't want. I ended up buying that for a pretty good price and am super happy with it. I'll mess around with the contour some more to see if i can get it usable but plan to use the drift primarily.
