Comments on your videos in foreign languages

Have you had any comments on your videos in other languages? If so, how do you respond to them?
Do you reply in your native tongue, reply in their language, ignore their comments, or anything else?

I've been responding in their own language, (not that I get many comments that are not in English)... and I find it kind of fun to interact with people I would not otherwise be able to interact with. I barely manage my own language lol, but use the wonders of Google translate to respond, it normally sparks up a good interaction, I wonder if it helps with the analytics???

It does add a few steps, and is easier to do via PC than phone, but I think it is worth it, even if YT doesn't notice the extra effort taken! :-)

I've made replies in Greek, Russian, Spanish, German, Portuguese, French, Italian, even American! ;-) haha :-D

I try to reply to everyone in ways they understand. Google translate is not perfect but it works good enough to communicate.

My favorite is Marco from France. He and I interact in Emojis:)
 
I've only done the opposite - listened and watched a motovlog in a different language that had subtitles, or CC available. I may have had one comment in another language on my channel. I think I did what you did in terms of getting it translated, but I may have replied in English.

With my luck my reply wouldn't be translated correctly, and I'd say something horrible.

I think I've had one or two comments in a language I don't understand and was an actual comment, not spam. It was someone from one of the Asian countries. I can not recall which. I chose to reply in English, because there is a higher chance he might be able to translate it for himself.
I also have someone who mainly comments in emoticons, even though he speaks English :P
 
I'm not sure what all the emoticons mean lol, am not up with the times! :-D hahaha
I do tend to also do a reverse translation of my reply back to English as a sanity check, Google has gotten a lot better than it was I think, but like you say, not perfect.
 
At this point how come there's not a Universal Language for riding? Like Road Speak, or something? It'd be cool if you could go anywhere in the world and openly speak to another rider.

It could be something like that Star Trek episode where no one could translate an alien's language because it was based on metaphors.

Darmok is one of my favorite episodes. It shows that communication is not just the word but the emotion and history behind the word. I found this when revisiting how it was interesting Picard was able to put the phrases in context in order to deduce their meaning:
The Tamarians' language has been compared to the modern use of internet memes and image macros.
Another reason I liked the episode was the alien captain was played by the same actor that was Chekov when Kahn put the bugs in their ears.

Coincidence that the earlier appearance dealt with the ear (hearing) and the second time dealt with speaking but not hearing beyond the words at first?

I get comments in foreign languages quite a bit, but I always reply in English, honestly never even thought to use Google Translate in reverse to respond in THEIR language. That's a good idea!

Not so much YT comments, but had no end of messages from Pakistan/Indian leather manufacturers and Chinese bluetooth helmet comms firms looking for distributors/retailers of their wares in the UK. The vast majority is clearly rubbish and/or blatant big brand knockoffs. I just ignore the lot.

Man, those poorly worded emails are a blast aren't they? I am surprised no Princes with need to get back in control of the bank accounts are involved.

I do the same thing @HippoDrone - I use Google Translate to figure out what they said, and then translate my response into their language. It takes literally seconds, and shows you care about the viewer, who cared enough to post a comment in the first place... so, politeness?

It never dawned on me that Google Translate could be faulty, but it makes sense. I might have to start translating my responses back into American to see if it worked.
