Chicken strips

I really don't know. Definitely not anything where I am hunched over the tank or the weight is on my wrists. Probably keep the scooter for commuting - anything bigger and I can't get through the gaps, plus the mpg is so good (95-100mpg) and a bigger bike may knock off all of 2 or 3 minutes in travel time. I usually catch them up in the filtering after the open roads, so can't see any benefit in that for my 15-mile commute.

Would really like a 400cc naked, shape of Yamaha SR although the reviews aren't that good for that. Like the old 80s look of road bikes, takes me back to my youth. Definitely don't need anything that is capable of gazillion miles per hour, just something that has a very reliable engine and mechanics (rather than technology), capable of going abroad so must be comfy for my fat arse and options for luggage.

Still looking. Probably end up with an old virago, lol.

NC700/NC750 maybe? Some people get around 100 if carefully ridden. Glen has just posted a review on his Street Triple, they're quite slim looking. My tubby mid-sized heavyweight as pictured on the left can do 60mpg+ depending how it's ridden, and I can filter most of the time. Think you'll have to sacrifice mpg if you want comfort on a European trip and want to take luggage. Look forward to seeing what you get either way.

Honda have good rep for reliability but someone had major problem on here with keys issues with their nc I think. Not too worried about mpg for bigger bike as that will b for fun rather than commuting

No use in throwing the "reliability" word around anymore. For the most part, all mfgrs are copying proven technology. Manufacturing methods are pretty much the same, world-wide. The exception being the Chinese knock-off industry, but that has not infiltrated the large motorcycle market - yet. Everyone is getting their electronics from the same place as well. All brands pretty much have the same niggles anymore, i.e. r/r failures, ect. Sure..... 10 years ago some brands were indeed more "reliable", but today's bikes are pretty equal, pick the model/style/price/features that fits the purpose you need and do the proper maintenance required.

Lurch - I originally thought the NC700 DCT would be perfect for me, but some of the various niggles are putting me off http://www.bikerglory.com/2012/12/honda-the-nc700-bikes-in-depth/

Hoonigan - took my tests and training on an SV650. Liked it other than the ride position and wind buffeting - all my weight was on my wrists causing problems for rides longer than 30 minutes, and above 60 the wind was trying to take my head off. May well have been my own predilection for positioning on the bike, but it just didn't work for me.

Will continue looking

Have you thought about a Suzuki V-Strom 650 or a Yamaha FZ1? Those are both on my short list for comfortable commuting bikes. Both are upright and both have better wind protection than most sport bikes. Or at the very least you can add better wind protection. I'm not sure what prices are like where you are but near me both bikes are very cheap to buy used too.

Tell you what, I do like the look of the 650 V-Strom. Mid-60s mpg for a 2007 or later model based on fuelly. Prices around £3k - I may well look at that

Unfortunately the FZ1 has may too much cc for me.

I suspect it may not be up your street, but you're welcome to come and have a look round mine some time if it's the type of bike that may be of interest. Appleyards on Roseville Road might have a V-Strom in for you to have a look at too, not too far from Leeds Centre.
