Mazda 3 here, nothing fancy, but she's a dependable fun driver. All stock... all my extra money goes into my bike lol :)

I would love an RX-8 or a MX-5, however. (So keep those pics coming!) Unfortunately, just not realistic as an only-car for me during midwestern winters.

The MX5 is a fine winters car if you have decent tires. But beware of rust. I never drive mine in the winter but I daily it in the summer, after 20 years it has some rust down the sides as expected.
 
MX-5 might not be winter friendly, - prone to rust, crap heater, engine is designed as a light, air cool reliant motor etc.

But an RX-8 is the ultimate winter vehicle. It's a rotary, being originally from Australia i can tell you - i have not yet had a friend who hadn't owned some sort Mazda RX, from RX-2 Savannahs to RX-7s - I've been around them all. They love winter!

As a owner of a MX5 I can only confirm the rust part. But that goes for all cars, measures can be taken to prevent it. As for the heater, it is a normal unit like with other cars. Combined with a small space to heat up. The motor is just a regular 4 banger with water cooling. It is actually less prone to overheat under load than my other cars with the large radiator. If anything, driving in the winter would make it even colder.

As a long-time MX-5 fan i can assure you, yes despite the car being water cooled from the thermostat to the aero dynamics of the car it is designed as a summer-friendly vehicle. Not that it's useless in winter. The main downside to the MX-5 winter-wise would be the seals, they're designed for heat, not for the cold. The freezing without lubrication do break the seals. The top can begin leaking, the latches weaken etc.

I can tell you even after the forged pistons, the turbo, the radiator upgrades and intercooler etc. it was still quite air reliant. I built my NB8B to 482 ish horsepower. :D

But come on RX8 is 10x more winter friendly than the MX lol.
