Camera Position Setup

What's the best place to mount a GoPro on, for a motovlog/ accident protection. I've currently got it on my right-side of my helmet, I'm considering putting it on the centre but theres no adhesive mount space for that. I saw a video a long time ago, of a chap using velcro straps through a skeleton door case then strapping over the chin section of the helmet which I might give a go. But any ideas? How and where is yours positioned?

You could put the mount on next to the chin and use arms to position the camera at the correctly. Might be wobbly though. Seen it used a couple of times. Or just do it in front but off-center and rotate. Depends on what your options in gear is.

I wouldn't even consider a top mount, looks strange and angle isn't much to work with if you want to show both bike and road.

Chin mount.

You can stick it somewhere on the side and use arms to get to the front like I do, or use Sugru liek RJ does.

Yeah, I've got a more offroad helmet so anything on the top would need a parachute. Think I may be playing around with it for a while to get right.

Are there chin mounts on the market? Did try the old google, but didn't find much. What the heck is Sugru?

Chin mount referrs to the location, not a particular mount type. People use curved mounts there as you would in other locations on the helmet.
Sugru is a PlayDo-like substance that hardens in place, basically glue. Used to fill in gaps if the normal mounts won't do.

Might have to check this Sugru stuff out, do you think the velcro idea would work out?

Velcro tends to deteriorate over time in my experience, so I wouldn't rely on it if you can do a proper GoPro mount instead.
As mentioned, you can extend the reach of the standard mounts with articulating arms, which can be bought cheaply from ebay. With that you can put the glue in a suitable location near the chin area and use the arms to place the camera exactly where you want it. It doesn't matter much for the audience if the camera is off-center really. Many motovloggers do the side mounts.

If you have a chest mount, you could give that a shot as an alternative location.

Appreciate your advice, will give it ago!

I use chest mount for my motovlogs and find it works well. But for accident protection just be aware you will be only be getting majority forward facing footage. You got to turn a fair bit to get footage to the side. At least chin mount will get what your looking at.

yeah, that was the problem for my current setup - you neglect the entire left side and because it's on the right.. murphy's law dictates whatever is possible will occur on the left!

I've got mine on the right, you don't miss that much if its positioned correctly.

Used to have it on the Right, I have it on the top now, it's good because you can see down to both sides of you pretty well as well as what's in front of you but you don't see much of the bike, however I can't run a chin mount with my current cable setup.

I use the curved mount on the chin, with the joints for mounting on the side. This makes it a bit of a larger mount set up, but it allows you to get the right angle. Having said that, I need to make the angle a bit lower, as my first motovlog only shows the road and a little of my bike. I also use extra strips of 3M tape on the sides of the mount that give it more of a curved surface so it works on my helmet. If I didn't add the extra strips of tape I wouldn't feel safe mounting it on the chin.

with gopros using the frame work u can make the camera go any were but it can end up looking silly i have a dual sports helmet i have spots all over it i can mount to that's y i made the transition to dual sports helmets

I still have no idea why people like to buy a GoPro and mount it on the helmet when there are far better options for a helmet Cam like a Drift Ghost-S or Sony Action Cam.

I prefer to just stick the GoPro on the handlebars instead. Since the GoPro always look pretty dumb jutting out like that.

Gopro is the only one you can put on the chin bar though.

I use the chin because I think it looks the best. And also for accident because it shows the same as you see
