Let me start off by saying there are some great high end makers of helmets out there. I want to share my experience with Bell helmets which makes me think these guys are freaking awesome!!!
I bought a mid range Bell about 12 months ago as an upgrade to a shitty lid that I got when I bought my previous bike. The maker of the previous lid is not important, but I can tell you it was crap! Poor engineering, poor ventilation...the list goes on.
Now I love Arai, I love Shoei! Having spent a significant time of my adulthood in Japan, there is no need for anyone to tell me how great both these helmet makers are.
When deciding to upgrade the old shitty lid though, I couldn't afford absolute premium prices for a new lid. I started looking at mid/high range helmets and trying them all on for personal fit and comfort. Have to say with a melon head like mine that looks like a busted arse, the Bell mid range helmet fit my bill.
It was on special at my trusty dealership for a bit under AU$400 and I thought it was a cracker! When riding with it, the ventilation was great, weight, comfort, everything was 1000% improve from the original helmet.
Anyway...the Bell's have a magnetic tab to latch back onto the D-Ring so you don't have annoying flap around. Unfortunately a minor problem was that the material over the magnet started to lift. I spoke to my trusted store, they straight away called the distributor and had my helmet switched over instantly. Brilliant!
Then last week I noticed a similar thing so spoke to the store again and the Bell distributors in Australia (Monza Imports) said "Screw that. You can have the upgrade." About another $200 on top of my previous purchase. Awesome!
The helmet was getting sent to Brisvegas from Melbourne so had 2 days to wait before it arrived. Yesterday I got a call from the store saying "Awesome news Mr Phill Andera, they said bugger you initial upgrade. They are sending you the top of the range, Bell Star Carbon"!!!!!!!!! (Mine is matte black to suit my bike)
Picked it up today and I can tell you, lucky it's Valentines day cause I'm in lurve!!! This helmet is amazing! Absolutely amazing! Ridiculously light, obscenely amazing ventilation, freakishly superpowered visibility (the peripheral vision is awesome and this thing is uber sexy to boot!
What an amazing company!! Bell, you have got a fully qualified, overweight cheerleader here with a head like a half chewed Twistie and may I say it, but you guys earned it!
Great customer care, great aftermarket service.
I highly recommend anyone who is looking for a new helmet to seriously consider the Bell. You'll be left a gibbering mess like I find myself right now.
